Cumberland Farm Women Hold Convention SHEPPENSBURG (Cumber land Co.) The 59th annual con vention of the Cumberland County Society of Farm Women was held Saturday, Nov. 14, at the Beistle Meeting Room, Shippensburg. During the past year, the 22 societies that meet throughout the county welcomed 15 new mem bers. Unfortunately seven mem bers passed away and nine mem bers dropped out, which adds up to a total of 307 members. These members raised $6,160 to give to local charities throughout the year. At the convention, two checks for $l5O each were pre sented to Cumberland County Hospice and to the Therapeutic Riding Association of Cumber land County. Lisa Marie Nissley, granddaughter of Gayle Fiy, member of Group 17, received a $l,OOO scholarship. Curtis Ray Beidel, son of Way ne and Loudenis Beidel, member of Group 21, received a $5OO scho larship. Fun, work, and entertainment throughout the year was accom plished through plant auctions, theater, musicals, food stands, fashion shows, shopping trips, gar den visits, candy sales, teas, lunc heons, banquets, baked goods sales. Bingo games, sewing teddy bears and stuffed animals for hos pitalized children, cookie exchanges, educational programs, helping families in need, macram ing lawn chairs, and participating CHOPPER #32 SCREW DOWN TYPE CHOPPER Si in many other activities. On her 100th birthday, members honored Grace Elizabeth Sollen bcrger Rider, who is a member of Group 9. She resides at Manor Care Health Services, Carlisle. Grace and her husband Olin had operated a meat market in Sliip pensburg. After moving to the Car lisle area, the couple participated in many church activities and Grace baked pies and cookies for Harrisburg and Carlisle Markets. Later she made salads for a food market. During the conventidn, the group honored four members who are 95 years of age or older. These included Mary Sunday of Group 1; Mary Mowety of Group 4; Mar garet Gamer of Group 6; and Esther Bradley of Group 13. Those celebrating a 90th birth day were Marian Swartz of Group S and Elizabeth Whitcomb of Group 14. Those receiving pins for their 80th birthdays included Marlee ' Rook of Group 5, Helen Sunday of Group 14, and Mary Weir of Group 19. Cumberland County Dairy Prin cess Rebecca Comman gave a skit about dairy products. She also talked about the many jobs filled by farmers and by his main suppor ter, the farm wife. Entertainment was provided by Newburg Area Men’s Chorus.
