featured a large paid political ad
vertisement. I was surprised to see
that the ad gave Governor Ridge
credit for “Implementing the Far
mers Market Nutrition Program."
That’s not quite true.
The Farmers Market Nutrition
Program began in the late 1980 s
under Governor Casey and Secre
tary of Agriculture Wolff. It start
ed as a pilot program, providing
fresh fruits and vegetables to
needy Women and children. The
idea was simple. Provide nutri
tious Pennsylvania produce to an
