    On Being a
Farm Wife
(and other
hazards)
Joyce Bupp
FALL HAS FELL..er,
FALLEN
October's here
And brings much change
Our setting now
We rearrange.
The summer stuff
Needs put away
'Cause cooler weather's
Here to stay.
Dig the dahlias
Yank the screens
Root through drawers
For wanner jeans.
Stack the lawn chairs
In the shed
Tuck flannel sheets
Upon the bed.
Shell the sunflowers
Store the 'taters,
Gather up
those last tomatoes.
Scrub storm windows
Wash the curtains
They sure need it
That's for certain.
Those "sticky tapes"
Can now come down
The calf barn flies
Are leaving town,
Cornfields are brown
And soybeans yellow
Each farmer's a
Very busy fellow.
The combines hum
Into the night
To harvest crops
When they're just right.
Our neighbors' lawns
Sport smould'ring leaves
Their smoke wafts by
On gentle breeze.

0 4-H
HAPPENINGS
The flowers are blooming
In one last fling
To set their seed
For another spring.
These chilly evenings
Sit and rock a bit
Trade the iced tea
For hot chocolate.
A "V" of geese
Flaps past the moon
Foretelling what's to come,
Too soon.
This IS my favorite
Time of year
Fall isn't coming....
Its already here.
ticipate in the 4-H program
sponsored and conducted by
Penn Sate Cooperative
Extension.
Any youth interested in par
ticipating in the beef club will
have options focused on breed
ing animals and/or market
steers. 4-H beef club members
will learn how to properly select,
house, feed and otherwise man
age a beef type animal(s),
including marketing.
Youth also will learn leader
ship skills by being a member of
the 4-H Beef Club. Public speak
ing, parliamentary procedure,
problem solving, decision mak
ing, public relations, and cooper
ation are just some of the skills
4-H members can learn if they
are involved in the 4-H program.
For potential 4-H members
who desire to maintain a market
steer project, animals must be
purchased prior to November so
all members can participate in
the annual 4-H Market Steer
weigh-in, usually held the first
Saturday in November.
