American Highland Cattle
Association Celebrates 50
GATLINBURG, Tenn. To
celebrate the 50th anniversary of
their association’s founding.
Highland cattle breeders from
throughout the United States will
gather here Oct. 1-4 for their 1998
National Convention.
Highland cattle originated in
Scotland perhaps as early as the
sixth century. Their genetics have
remained basically unchanged
through the year. Qualities that
have all but disappeared in other
breeds are what make highlands
so unique today. They are es
pecially noted for their hardiness,
disease resistance, calving ease,
mothering instincts, docile nature,
browsing ability, thriftiness and
longeity, with many cows calving
into their late teens.
Highland beef is rapidly be
coming popular in the United
States, as consumers are willing to
fall customer

pay more for premium aged beef.
European-trained chefs prefer
Highland beef due to its superior
quality, texture and leanness. It
has historically commanded pre
mium prices from the discriminat
ing British beef consumer and is
served in the finest country-house
hotels. During the last few years,
several enterprises have started to
expand herd numbers to meet the
demand for this beef. Market ex
pansion is in white tablecloth res
taurants, major natural food super
markets, and mail-order gourmet
customers.
Open house seminars are plan
ned during the convention. For
