JOYCE BUPP York CO. Correspondent YORK (York Co,) - A 240- pound purebred Yorkshire hog snagged grand champion honors at the York county 4-H livestock show for Fawn Grove exhibitor Susan Richardson. The annual roundup show and sale was held August 11 at the York 4-H Center. For 16-year-old Susan, the banner day came after just three years of exhibiting market hogs, along with the dairy and lamb projects she raises for 4-H and FFA projects. At the sale, which followed, the market-ready pig commanded a $2.50 per pound price from buyer Martin Heaps, Fawn Grove. Susan plans to uti lize her market hog income toward either or both her college fund or the purchase of next year’s show pigs. "We don’t have facilities for breeding hogs, so we have to buy them," she says to the Charles and Ruth Richardson family dairying operation near Fawn Grove. This season's market hog purchases came from the breed ing operation of Wilson Brothers, New Freedom. York 4-H Selects Hog Champions on honors for younger sister Barbara Richardson, 14. Reserve champion honors went to Lane Innerst, Red Lion, with a 240-pound crossbred. The pink-ribboned winner was sec ond in the sale and sold for $2.80 per pound to the Early American Steam Engine Society. Champion pair exhibitor was Russell Wilson, New Freedom, with a matched set of 240- and 245-pound market hogs Buyer of the pair was 93rd legislative district candidate Ron Miller, Jacobus, at $1.50 per pound for both hogs. Heather Jasienski exhibited the reserve champion pair, a set of 202 and 200 pound pits. Both sold to Hatfield Quality meats, Hatfield, for a 95-cent bid. Champion heavyweight, at 275 pounds, was exhibited by Jessica Innerst, Red Lion. Buyer was Windsong Farm Kennels, Red Lion, for $1.20 per pound. Adam Shue, Jr, exhibited the -235-pound champion medi umweight pig, which sold for $1 55 per pound to Wildasm Dairy, Hanover. Shue also took the reserve mediumweight honor with a 221-pound entry which sold for $1.45 to Ken Snyder Masonry, Dover. Barbara Richardson's light weight champion, at 200 pounds, sold on a $1.30 per pound bid to York Building Products, York. The Fawn Grove exhibitor had the reserve weight winner as well, with Kessler's Inc., Lemoyne, the winning bid der at $1.40 per pound for the 200-pound pig. - Bobbi Myers exhibited the reserye heavyweight champion, which sold to a trio of buyers who donated it back for resale to benefit the 4-H Center's animal exhibition facility. Paying $3 per pound for the 270-pound pig were Lease's Auto Body and Paint Specialists, East Berlin; McClann Plastics, Hanover; and A/C Service and Repair, Inc. York. Hatfield Quality Meats re purchased the pig on the second round of bidding, with a $1.50 per pound bid which generated $405 toward the show facility. The reserve heavyweight win ner was one of the three pigs sold by Bobbi Myers which were donated back for resale foi the exhibition center. In the showmanship competi tion, honors were split between Adam Shue, named the champi on showman, and Lindsay Jones, selected reserve champi on showman.
