James Dorrance, who had been handcrafting kirmture in Clear Spring since the 1830 s, moved to Lisbon, Ohio in 1872, leaving the business in the capable hands ot his son-in-law. Mrs. Cushwa is the daughter ot Emanuel Frantz's son, William - also a cabinetmaker - and she married cabinetmaker Leon Cushwa, so this auction will include various hand crafted pieces from three generations of local furni ture makers There is also some very desirable original art, includ ing various paintings by Baltimore artist and inventor Oliver Tarbell Eddy, whose works are presently in the peimanent collections of the Baltimore Museum ol Art, the Maryland Historical Society, The Newark Museum and the Frick Art Reference Library; and a large engraving ot President Grant by George Frederick Cummmg Smilhe, with autograph. Smillie should probably be the most famous artist in America, for it was Smilhe who, 1918, engraved the famous portrait of George Washington that is stall used on the one dollar bill. Also included are some unusual items from Lynnwood Manor, a Howard County mansion for merly owned by James C. Adams, Sr., an ancestor of Mrs Cushwa An abbreviated list of items to be sold include: a museum-quality Portsmouth Federal secretary, circa 1800; very unusual Victorian bed 100m suite, with hand-carved detailing (the bow front dresser has marble top and the bed was custom-made in oversize), walnut corner cupboard made by Leon Cushwa. of walnut lumber, cut and dried from Walnut Hill Farm, 80" tall.
