Rutgers Extension Offers Timber Program FLEMINGTON, N.J. On August 27, at 6 p.m., Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Hunterdon County, New Jersey, is to conduct a twighlight fore stry program, “An In-the woods, Up-Close-and- Personal Look at Timber Harvesting and Regenera tion in a North Jersey Woodlot." The program is to be con ducted by Dr. Mark Vodak, forestry Extension special ist, with Rutgers. Also involved are to be Win Cowgill, county agri cultural Extension agent, and Mr. Duke Grimes, a consulting forester who manages the forest property to be toured. The woodland is a mixed hardwood forest type com mon in northern New Jersey. The primary species are red oak, white oak, black oak, tulip poplar and ash. At the time of harvest, the stand was well-stocked and mature. Sawtimbcr and veneer logs were the prim ary products harvested. Since the harvest, man agement activities have also focused on successful ly regnerating the next forest. Weeding and other tim ber stand improvement activities have been imple mented to aid regeneration. Additionally, particip ants can view and discuss the use of tree tubes for see dling protection as part of the overall regeneration strategy. With the landowner’s objectives in mind, the management activities implemented to date pro vide both income for the landowner and sustains the woodland as forested open space for future generations. The advantages and dis advantages of these man agement practices, will be discussed during the prog ram. Participants can see for themselves what these practices are, what the results look like, and have the chance to ask questions. For directions to the property on Draehook Road, and to register for the prbgram, call the Rutgers Cooperative Extension Office in Hunterdon Coun ty in Flemington at (908) 788-1339, by August 26, the deadline for registration.
