On Being a Farm Wife (and other hazards) , Joyce Bupp A soft, subtle fragrance per meates the house. (No, not skunk. That one still wrinkles our noses on occasional evenings, but at least two of the local skunk babies have sadly met their fate on the roads through the farm). This far more pleasant scent drifts steadily across the road and through the office and kitchen, nudged by gentle breezes floating down the hill. Early morning and late evening dampness, as well as the show*- ers that have blessed the neigh borhood recently, enhance the delicate perfume. August aromatherapy. The fragrance of pollinating corn. The perfume of pollination reeks of a crop in the making, of winter feed for livestock and grain to market And that’s pret ty soothing to farmers. This del icate olfactory pleaser is a fleet ing sensation, vanishing as the ripe, receptive corn stalks quick ly brown toward maturity. More August aromatherapy has replaced the usual summer time damp and slightly-mildewy scent in our old house’s cellar. Fresh local peaches from a neighboring orchard are careful ly laid out side by side in a flat cardboard box, cushioned with plastic grocery bags and covered to hasten their ripening in the Peaches began ripening earli er than usual this year, but must have picked up extra fla vor with their speed. They are absolutely delicious, some of the sweetest I remember eating in years. The only “down” side of earlier peaches is that they may not stretch out as long into the fall. Thus, we must concentrate on gobbling lots of ‘em while they’re so deliciously available. Another fruity scent hangs around a small bush in the back yard shrub border. Our lone blueberry bush has failed to grasp the concept that blueber ries bear best with a couple of friends around for pollination. It went ahead and singlehandedly populated itself with lots of berries, which have been ripen ing over a couple weeks. I refrig erated several handfuls of these favorites of The Farmer until there were enough to create a really special August Aromatherapy, the smell of blue , berry cheesecake baking in the oven. But others hanker after the plump, lightly-scented blueber ries. Before I realized last year why the mockingbird was per petually hanging around the border, it was too late. Every blueberry on the little bush had been devoured. By then, all I could do was be aggravated at myself. And buy blueberries. One recent morning, I spied the mockingbird, tentatively hopping around in the grass, cocking its head from side to side, checking out the blueberry bush from a distance. That bush - is encased in a tangle of nylon netting this season, salvaged from one of the big round bales Largest Nutrition Grant ROBBINSVILLE, NJ Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman announced that Pennsylvania’s Department of Education received a $249,951 grant, the largest of 17 competi tive grants awarded to individ ual states, to help the states pro mote nutrition education and healthy foods in the school cafe teria, the classroom and the community.
