Let’s focus now on business
plans. In their book “Business
Plans for Dummies”, authors Paul
Tiffany and Steven Peterson state
“Planning is a strategy to improve
the odds of success in a business
world that’s constantly changing”.
A business plan involves look
ing at where you’ve been, where
you are, where you want to take
your business and how you plan
to get there. It looks at your in
dustry and your competition.
While developing the plan, you
review the strengths, weaknesses,
opportunities and threats as each
relates to your business.
• What does a business
plan typically include? Al
though the information may
be organized differently, most
will include the following;
• Summary of the plan.
This is sometimes referred to

is actually the first section
and provides a concise review
of the entire plan.
• Develop a mission
statement Establish goals
and objectives that will focus
and guide you toward your
mission. These goals and ob
jectives are a critical compo
nent and require careful con
sideration. Determine how
you will track and analyze ac
tual results against these
goals. Create a vision state
ment. Place in writing the
values by which your busi
ness will be operated.
• A description of your
business that includes a re
view of management and ad
visors. Are you organized as

What products or services do
you provide 9 What is your
marketing strategy?
• An analysis of the in
dustry, your suppliers, your
competitors and your custom
ers.
• A financial review
that provides both historical
information (if available) and
projections. All projections
must be consistent with the
other assumptions made
within your plan.
• Indicate your strate
gies for addressing the issues
described within the other sec

ample, maybe you are consid
ering scaling back, expanding
or exiting the industry. Dis
cuss why you are considering
the proposed strategies.
• Finally, an action
plan that indicates the specific
steps you expect to take to
implement the plan. For ex
ample, do you need to in

your employees require addi

plan work 9
Remember, the business plan
does not provide all the right and
