Tom Ridge announced that the USDA has granted his re quest to declare a major disaster for farmers in four Pennsylvania counties. Family farmers in Allegheny, Berks, Somerset, and Wyoming countries are eligible to apply for federal disaster aid, including Farm Service Agency (FSA) emergency loans. Ridge made the request for dis aster assistance because of the severe storms, tornadoes, and Bob McQuiston, right, was named the association’s Senior of the Year. Ridge’s request for farm assistance was made in con junction with his general disaster relief request to President Clinton on June 3. “We are very pleased that the request for assistance to the com monwealth’s number one industry has been approved,’* Ridge said “This has been a very difficult planting season for Pennsylvania farmers, and the official declara tion from the USDA will offer Pa. Simmental some support for our struggling farmers.” In addition to the above coun ties, 19 other Pennsylvania coun ties are named as contiguous counties where eligible family fanners also may qualify for FSA emergency loan assistance.
