They feed Purina feeds, they make a lot of milk, and they are served by Hess Mills, Paradise, with Rick Hess as farm consultant. Cedar Cove Farm has been feeding Purina since 1990 and now has a rolling herd average of 24,800 pounds of milk. Thirteen cows are milking over 100 pounds and one has peaked at 135 pounds. The top individual record is 42,000 pounds. "One thing I can say about Purina,” the Amishman said. ’’Since I am on Purina, I think every second calf heifer has peaked at 100 pounds of milk or better. The cows milk real good and they keep on going.” At Herr Hollow Farm, they milk 42 cows that put out an average of 3,700 pounds o milk in the bulk tank each day. This Amish family has a long history of feeding Purina feeds and other family members are also Purina customers. With corn silage, hay, ground dry corn, 36 Concentrate, and Super EXT top dress, they have a 90 pound daily average on 2x with a top individual record of 148 pounds. This Amishman likes the nutritional advice he gets from Purina representatives who are “born dairymen. The third Amish farm is located south of Strasburg and here they produced 1,300,000 pounds last year from 47 cows. At any given time you can find up to half the herd milking 100 pounds per day. A stand-out first calf heifer has been fresh nine months and is still milking 100 pounds per day. "Purina feeds keep the cows immune system better,” the Amishman said. "We just seem to have less health problems. Cows come in, calve out, and in two weeks they are milking over 100 pounds. We never had cows milk like this. And we don’t have as many health problems as when we were getting less production. All three dairymen recommend Purina to other dairymen because Purina feeds make more milk. They would not consider any other feed because they have never made more money than they are right now feeding Purina.
