820-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 13, 1998 mm BUHLDINGIHE FUTURE Secretary of Agriculture Keynote Speaker at West Snyder FFA More than 200 members and guests attended the annual West Snyder FFA Chapter Awards Banquet on Thursday, May 7. Samuel Hayes, Jr., Pennsylvania secretary of agri culture, served as the keynote speaker. Hayes congratulated mem bers of the West Snyder FFA Chapter on their honors and quality reputation, which is known throughout the common wealth. He encouraged those in attendance to live by the FFA motto “Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live, and living to serve.” He used several examples where the FFA motto can be applied to everyday life, regard less of the occupation in which one is employed. Following his remarks, secretary Hayes was awarded the FFA Honorary Chapter Degree. Heidi Good and Jessica Walter, members of the Honorary Degree Team made the presentation. Throughout the evening, there were many awards received by the FFA members. Dr. William Sheaffer, superin tendent of Midd-West School District, presented the Star Greenhand Awards to Jodi Fetterolf, Kate Heeter, and Carolyn Howard, and the Star Chapter Award to Heidi Good. Ken Boyer, West Snyder High School principal, recognized Luke Zerby as the DeKalb Agricultural Accomplishment Award winner and Dustin Herman as recipient of the Agriculture Award. The Honorary Degree team presented the Honorary Degree to Mr. and Mrs Harrison Herman and Mr. and Mrs Barry Kramer for being parents of the 1998 West Snyder FFA Keystone Degree winners and Steve Bernardi, wildlife conser vation officer with the Pennsylvania Game Commission. Mr. and Mrs. Nevin Zerby received a special plaque for having the seventh child to earn the Keystone Degree. Annette Gray, North Central Regional FFA coordinator, recog nized Rose Carper as the 1997- 98 Snyder County Star Farmer. Michael Schrey of Northeastern Farm Credit pre sented Luke Zerby with a plaque and a $3OO savings bond for earning the Pennsylvania FFA Record Keeping Award. Twenty one members of the West Snyder FFA Chapter received plaques for their completion of an SAE record book and their participa tion in the SUN area FFA record keeping contest. On May 7 Penn Manor’s newly elected FFA offi cers went to the Leadership Conference at Lancaster Mennonite High School. The conference was held for all the FFA chapters across Lancaster County. The purpose of this conference was to highlight each office and give Ideas to help the officers to do a better Job In their specific office.
