Disaster assistance legislation initiated by National Farmers Union (NFU) was approved by Congress recently. Once signed into law, it will provide assis tance in the amount of $253 mil lion to regions hit by flooding and blizzards this winter “Excessive rain in January and February resulted in some California dairy producers hav ing to move their operations to higher ground, while producers in the Northeast suffered severe financial losses due to a series of crippling blizzards,” said NFU President Leland Swenson The legislation passed by Congress provides $l6O million in agriculture disaster assis tance, including $34 million for the emergency conservation pro gram, $B7 million for emergency farm operating loans, and $BO million for emergency water shed and flood prevention An additional $93 million has been earmarked for farmer owner ship and operating loans. Included in the agriculture dis aster assistance funding is $6 8 million designated to (ompen sate producers for losse- of milk that was produced but not mar keted or for diminished milk production.
