ANSWER Linda of Carlisle wanted information on Schenck's Mill covered bridge located on the Chickes Creek, Lancaster Co. Thanks to Anna Mary Rohrer, East Berlin, for sending information on the bridge, built in 1855. Linda wanted to know if a mill was originally located at the bridge. How did it get the name Schenck’s Mill? If it was named after Schenck’s, what is the first names of the people? According to the infor mation from Anna Mary, the house of the miller is still standing with the date stone (in German) stating that it was built by Johann Schenck and Barbara Schenck in 1803. The remains of the milldam are in back of the house. Near the bridge on the upstream side is a barn built on the mill foundations —the most colorful stones ever seen by bridge researchers. The bridge itself is unusual for the county. It has horizontal clapboard siding, four rectangular windows with wooden awnings on its east-bank end. ANSWER Maralee Chaffee, Laßayesville, is desperate to rid their house and lawn of crickets in the fall. They usually last two months, at least, until the first killing frost in Oct. In the fall, the Chaffees have millions of crickets in the yard, which becomes literally black with big black, juicy crickets. Hun dreds are killed with each step to the clothesline. The crickets come into the house each night and the family kills hundreds each morning when they wake up. The family is planning a fall outdoor wedding for one of their children. Do they spray now to kill the eggs in the ground before they hatch or must they wait until fall to spray malathion and hope the crickets eat it and die? Salome Stoltzfus recommends this homemade remedy: Mix together: 1 cup ammonia, A cup Palmolive dishwasing soap, % cup castor oil, A cup human urine. Mix together and spray around the edges of the lawn and garden. Pests can’t stand the smell of it. Be sure you don’t omit the last ingredient. It is a must. For an instant insect preventer, mix 1 teaspoon liquid Pal molive dishwashing soap to every quart water. Spray on everything, trees, lawn, vegetables, and fruit trees.
