Spring is upon us and the urge to clean cabins for the summer is growing stronger. This year, with the death of two Pennsylvania residents from the Hantavirus, there is cause to be careful but not panicked. The cases, both in the Allentown area, were the first reported in the state. Activities that put you in con tact with rodent droppings, urine or nesting materials, such as open ing up a camp or cleaning out buildings, could put you at some risk. Avoid touching rodent drop pings and actions that would raise dust when cleaning. The Hantavirus was first found in the Four Comers area of the southwest in 1993 when sev.eral young adults complained of acute respiratory distress and about half of them died. The virus has been confirmed in the deaths of 179 in dividuals in the last five years. Se veral species of wild rodents such as the deer mouse and the white footed mouse have been linked to the virus. Contact with the virus infected rodent urine, droppings or saliva could make you sick. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has a number of recommendations for prevention and control. They are simple precautions that most of us already follow in cleaning our homes and areas where rodents may have been. First, exclude rodents from ca bins and camps by blocking holes and filling cracks. Wash all dishes and utensils with hot soapy water and store your food in rodent iroof containers. Pick up the wet material with a damp towel and mop or wipe area with disinfectant Bury, bum, ex' dis pose of your cleaning materials in a proper manner. Disinfect your gloves before removing them and then wash your hands with soap and warm water. The symptoms of the disease are somewhat non-specific and in clude fever, fatigue, muscle ache, dizziness, nausea or vomiting and may begin in one to five weeks. If symptoms occur, check with your physician and mention that you may have been exposed to rodent contamination. While there have only been two cases in Pennsylva nia, more than 40 percent of the individuals who have contracted the virus nationwide have died. If you have any questions whatso ever about this virus, contact the CDC at the National Center for In fectious Diseases Centers for Dis ease Control and Prevention, 1600 Clifton Road, NE Atlanta, GA 30333, (800) 532-9929.
