Use Port Of Philadelphia And Camden PHILADELPHIA - A ship ment of 850 bred Holstein heifers recently left the Port of Philadel phia and Camden for a 21-day trip to the country of Lebanon, mark ing the second shipment from the port State Secretary of Agriculture Samuel Hayes Jr., who has been aggressively promoting exporting activities and opportunities, attended the early morning ship ment in order to observe the load ing of the heifers for the trip. “We want to sec the Port of Phi ladelphia used for more and more exports like this,” Hayes said, not ing that Gov. Tom Ridge and his administration are committed to increasing exporting opportunities for Pennsylvania’s farmers and agribusinesses. The first shipment out of the port was done last October through R.K. Exports Inc., of Culpepper, Va. G. Gordon Thornhill, general manager of the business, assembled both orders, collecting animals from 20 states. The animals were housed at the Pennsylvania Holstein Associa tion’s Middletown farm, used as an official quarantine station. In addition to serving the PHA for its export shipments, the Mid dletown facility is also leased for the use of other organizations in preparing animals for shipments and as a quarantine holding area prior to being shipped to ensure that the animals cotrform to snecif ic biological security measures required by purchasers and those required by United States' regulations.
