Clifford Jones, a well-known
political analyst and state govern
ment leader, will be the guest
speaker at the 18th Annual State
wide FARMER Dinner. He will
discuss “Pennsylvania Politics
and You.”
FARMER (Farmers Allied for
Responsive More Effective Rep
resentation) is the bipartisan poli
tical action committee of the
Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB).
FARMER is dedicated to help
elect and keep “friends of agricul
ture’* in die Pennsylvania General
Assembly. •
The FARMER fund-raising
event will take place Monday,
May 4 at the Hershey Lodge and
Convention Center, Hcrshey. The
event will begin with a reception
at S;3O p.m., followed by the din
ner at 6:30 p.m.

in public service as a negotiator,
administrator and problem
solver,” said FARMER committee
chairman Ed Hartman of Reading.
“He brings a wealth of experience
on the workings of government
which is sure to enlighten those at

Jones has served under four
governors in cabinet positions as
secretary of Commerce, of labor
and Industry, and of the former
Department of Environmental Re
sources. He also served as a mem
ber of the Public Utility Commis
sion including a brief stint as its
chairman.
In die private sector, Jones was
president of the political action
committee. Pennsylvanians for
Effective Government, for four
yean. Under his the
PAC’s political budget climbed to
over $200,000 each election year.
He was also chairman of die Re
publican State Committee of
Pennsylvania for four years and
during the period erased a
$600,000 debt which he had in
herited. In addition, he was presi
dent of the Pennsylvania Chamber
of Business and Industry from
1983 until his retirement in 1991.
He was successful in forming
coalitions to lobby for a broad
spectrum of issues that have sus
tained and improved the business
climate in Pennsylvania.
Jones is presently co-chair of
Governor Ridge’s BRAC PAC, a
volunteer position created to help
save defense industry jobs in
Pennsylvania. He is also executive
director of the Pennsylvania
Health Care Cost Containment
Council In addition, he serves on
25 other boards and commissions.

of the interest Farm Credit earned
on their loons for 1997.
