Lancaster Farming Staff HARRISBURG (Dauphin Co.) A 4-year-old cow jointly owned by Tom McCauley and Fred Strouse of Elizabethtown was named grand champion of the 4Sth Pennsylvania Holstein Associa tion Spring Show, held March 27 at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg. The cow, Dandyland Starbuck Maggy, was bred by Dandyland Farm and purchased by McCauley and Strouse. The win makes the second year straight that the McCauley family Tom and his father Alan McCauley, owner of New Direction Holsteins stood with the grand champion of the state Holstein Association's spring show. The show was judged by Donald Johnston of Marintown, Ontario, Canada, and saw more than 278 cataloged, though with “scratch es,” there were about 226 actually exhibited. The number of exhibitors, adult and junior members, was also strong. Last year, New Direction won with a bred and owned aged cow, Jet Cameo, while the honors this year were shared by Strouse and Tom McCauley. The reserve grand champion this year was also a jointly owned cow. Justin Burdette of Mercersburg and Mike Heath of Maryland showed their senior 3-year-old, Theona Blackjack Simba, bred by Thomas Watson and sons, to be placed as the reserve senior and reserve grand champion in the open division. The junior champion of the open division was a fall yearling, Tri- Day Adeen H, bred and owned by David Day of Shippensburg. The reserve junior champion of the open division was a spring yearling, Tri-Dee Skybuck Fergie, owned by Thomas Grctz Jr, of Mt. Pleasant. The best bred and owned of the open division show was the first place junior 3-year-old, Sun nybend Jump For Joy-ET, bred and owned by June Boyer and John While deep competition charac terized almost all classes (an exception was that there were no dry cows entered under 4-years of age), the level of competition was stiff in the junior 3-year-old class. The first place animal in the class for the youth division was ranked seventh in the open divi sion. That compares to many of the young animal classes having youth division entries rank just behind or actually win the open division show. The youth also fared well in most of the adult animal classes. Continuing a winning streak of sorts for the honors, Penn-Gatc Holsteins of Littlestown owned and operated by Robert Gitt, and Steve and Christine Wood, whose son Clayton showed well in classes won both clas ses for premier breeder and pre mier exhibitor. Gor-Wood-D Holsteins of Man sfield was second for premier breeder, whilt New Direction Holsteins placed second for pre mier exhibitor. Youth Division In the youth division show, the grand champion was also the best bred and owned champion. Matth ew Bean’s senior 2-year-old Roll ing Spring Emy Spicy-ET, a MJR Blackstar Emory daughter out of a home-bred Prelude daughter, was a late addition to the show catalog, but first in a strong class. The reserve grand champion of the youth division was a 5-year old, Coldsprings Inspire Bola, owned by David Day of Tri-Day Holsteins in Shippensburg, giving the youth two champions for the day. The junior champion of the youth division was a fall yearling owned by Amanda Cessna, Windy-Knoll-View Pal-ET, the reserve junior champion was Windy-Knoll-View RKB Peskie, bred and owned by Kyle Burdette of Windy-Knoll-View Farm in Mercersburg.
