An educational forum for those inter ested in meat goat production will be held Saturday, March 28 from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. here at the ex tension building, St. Mary’s County Fairground. Sponsored by the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service and Southern Maryland Meat Goat Association, the forum is being conducted to inform and educate prospective, beginner, and veteran goat producers about various management strategies designed to improve animal per formance. Basic animal manage ment techniques will be offered to encourage those participants who are just getting started in raising meat goats. Cover Crops Conference Set For Maryland Ag Leaders COLLEGE PARK, Md. Cover crops during the winter months seem like a great idea for keeping farmland nutrients from leaching into the Chesapeake Bay. So why have agricultural pro ducers been slow to adopt their use as recommended in Mary land’s tributary team plans? Recent scientific research and field experience address many of the previous cover crop limita tions. So the University of Mary land’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources has scheduled a two-day Cover Crops Conference to share these findings with agri cultural, natural resource and en vironmental professionals. The conference also will be of interest to public officials, farm and en vironmental groups, and fanners themselves. The two-day event is scheduled March 18 and 19 in the Tidewater Inn at Easton. Support is being provided by the University of Maryland’s Cooperative Exten sion Service, with supplementary 10 a. m 1:15 p.m 2:30 p.m 5:30 p.m 9 a.m Topics will include health care, feeding goats on pasture, breed performance, strategic parasite control, animal selection work shop, handling techniques work shop, and electric fence for goats. Presenters will include Dr. Terry Gipson, extension goat specialist, Virginia State University; Dr. Jean-Marie Luginbuhl, extension specialist, meat goats and forage systems. North Carolina State University; and Dr. Chris Runde, DVM, Tidewater Veterinary Hos pital, Charlotte Hall, Md. Lunch and meeting materials are included in the registration fee, which is $lO per person in ad vance and SIS after March 23.
