New agri cultural tools and techniques may be making work easier and more productive for American farmers. But industry safety of ficials say these innovations must be handled with as much cate by farmers today as their ancestors did with the horse and plow. To help farmers and even weekend gardeners remain pro ductive and safe, a free Harford County Agricultural Innova tion and Safety Expo will be held March 28 from 9:30 am. to 2:30 pm. on the North Har ford High School campus in Pylesville. Manufacturers have been flooding the fanning market in recent years with many new products to keep pace with the changing U.S. agricultural in dustry, according to Harford County Cooperative Extension Service Director Robert Hal man. But if proper safety and operational procedures are left behind when these products are taken into the fields, the results can be tragic, he said. “Although farmers are con scientious, things can be taken for granted,” Halman said. “Unfortunately in the produc tion of crops here, there have been some near fatal and fatal accidents.” The list of participants at the expo is growing every day. Along with the extension ser vice, sponsors and demonstra tors include Walter G. Coale - New Holland, Deeer Creek Equipment - John Deere, Har ford County Hazardous Mater ials Team, Whitefoid Volun teer Fire Company Heaps Oil, Harford County Farm Credit, North Harford High School Fu ture Farmers of America and Keep Your Cows Comfortable with “TUNNEL VENTILATION” Comfortable Cows Produce More Milk I « LSJLJL System Experts aerotecH ' Summer Heat^ m Tunnel 3to ■# Mph WP | . Proper operation of a hay baler, forage blower, sprayer equipment and com bine will be demonstrated. Cor rectly handling livestock and providing animal safety will be covered by the FFA, Other scheduled exhibits and displays include Safe Handling of Petroleum Products, Roll- Over Protective Structures, Livestock and Horse Trailer Safety, Electric Fence Safety, Farm Fires, Pesticide Spills, BREAKING MILK RECORDS! Also at the expo, persons who have held a Private Pesti cide Application license can be recertified through a 30-minute training program provided by the University of Maryland Co operative Extension Service and the Maryland Department of Agriculture. Whether it’s improving an application technique; watch ing a new tool demonstration; or practicing new safety proce dures around farm equipment and animals, everyone can leant something beneficial at the expo, according to Harford County Government Risk Manager and former Commer cial Sprayer John Walter. “From making sure you still read all of the manufacturer’s warnings and instructions on a replacement model for an old farm implement before using it for the first time to buckling your safety belt on a tractor be fore you start it each time,” Walter said, “it’s all part of keeping you safe.” Far more information, call the Harford County Coopera tive Extension Service at (410) 638-3255.
