Roth spoke about the grow ing year before presenting the annual Five-Acre Com Club Contest awards recently at the Pennsylvania Com and Soy bean Conference at the Grant ville Holiday Inn. Despite a year of cool, wet planting, severe drought, and cold harvests, some growers did well. Com winners from the S-Acre Com Club contest are: • First place, shelled grain class, three-year average award, regular harvest size, Jeff Mitchell, Reinholds, for an average of 197.5 bushels per acre using Pioneer 3293 and Pioneer 3335. • Second place went to Matthew Maximuck. Doyles town, for an average of 191.5 Maximum Yield One of the most significant traits developed for com plants has been Bt com, which pro tects plant yield potential, noted Mattingly. Stalk rot from com borer damage critically affects yield. By reducing com borer feeding, the “plumbing system” that is the stalk can feed a healthier plant during the grow ing season. “We can’t change the weath- East Coast Grain & Bulk Commodity Headquarters _ Our 20th year as a [ Volume Timpte Dealer • Sales, Parts.
