Zoumas, recently retired vice president of science and technology with Hershey Foods Corp., has been named Alan R. Warehime Professor of Agribusiness in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences. The professorship was endowed in 1989 by Alan R. Warehime, the late president of Hanover Foods, to "enhance the college's commitment to the develbpment of agribusiness leaders." The Warehime profes sor will develop a program inte grating business, economics, and international perspectives into the college's academic courses and act as a catalyst for collaborative projects in agribusiness education and research across departments in the college and the university. "My assignment as Warehime professor is to integrate my business experience with the future needs of the college," Zoumas said. "I'll also stress giving students a perspective on the agricultural industry so they will be better prepared to meet the needs of the agribusiness community." "If Penn State is to prepare 'society-ready' graduates, we need to know what industry's definition of society-ready is," said Robert Steele, dean of the college. Zoumas spent most of his business career at Hershey Foods, starting as the manager of nutritional sciences in 1970. Until his Penn State appoint ment, he was the chief technical officer at the corporation for 16 years, serving on the staff of three chief executive officers. As a member of the Corporate Planning Committee, he partici pated in strategic decisions that expanded the company ten-fold. Zoumas provided leadership for more than 300 employees. During his tenure, his staff developed new products worth more than $6OO million. He also was responsible for implement ing the modernization of all chocolate manufacturing sys tems and the construction of three new manufacturing facili ties. During his career, Zoumas was responsible for all agribusi ness programs, including a cocoa plantation in Central America. He also directed the corporate milk procurement program, supervising contracts with more than 800 Pennsylvania dairy farmers. His international experience is extensive. He served as prin cipal adviser to U.S. Aid for Agricultural Development in the Caribbean area and worked in Belize, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, Guatemala and Brazil. He was a visiting scien tist for six months at the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations in 1997. Zoumas' agricultural research for Hershey included plant breeding, fermentation, microbiology and integrated pest management. He started major research programs on peanuts and almonds to control aflatoxin and improve quality. He also began new breeding pro grams for peanuts and almonds, and oversaw Hershey's biotech nology program, which focused on the molecular biology of cocoa. Zoumas was named Hershey's director of research in 1976 and was promoted to direc tor of research and development in 1979. In 1981, he was pro moted to his final position and assumed additional responsibili ties as vice president, technical, for Hershey Chocolate USA. He earned a bachelor's degree in chemistry from Kutztown University in 1964. Shorthorn Breeders Meet PROSPECT (Butler Co.) - Members of the Pennsylvania Shorthorn Cattle Breeders Association held their annual membership dinner meeting Feb. 21 here at the Garden Gate Restaurant. Evening speaker was Donald Hunter, livestock extension spe cialist for Butler, Lawrence, and Armstrong counties. Hunter's topic was "marketing." He men tioned exhibiting at county fairs, participating in bull test pro grams, and being active in local and state cattle organizations. An important aspect is the "follow up" after a sale, in addi tion to promptness in providing registration papers and farm visits to check on an animal's progress. Participation in breed sales and club calf sales was mentioned. The association agreed to a doctorate in nutrition in 1969. Before coming to Hershey Foods Corp., he worked as senior sci entist at the Mead Johnson Research Center in Evansville, Ind., in 1969 and 1970. He also is a graduate of Stanford University's Senior Executive Program.
