The Nov. 29,1997 issue of Lan
caster Fanning contained an arti
cle from a university scientist who
claimed that venison is not a low
cholesterol meat, and went on to
“show” in a tabulated form, that
venison contained significantly
higher cholesterol than a compar
ably-sized portion of beef.
As a veterinarian with good
knowledge of meats (and as a deer
hunter as well), let me firmly state
that his facts are in error. I enclose
a copy of compared analyses for
several sorts of meat; it is very
clear that venison is truly a lower
fat, lower cholesterol meat, such
that it is recommended as part of

A Success
REYNOLDSBURG, Ohio -
The 1997 edition of the Jersey
Silent Auction made history as
the first auction to be held and
accept bids via the Internet.
Sale catalogs and pedigrees
were made available online and
bidders registered for bidder
numbers and passwords.
Bidders from as far as Australia
and South Africa joined with
others for a total of 10 registered
internet bidders.
Three lots sold over the inter
net, two going to Australia and
one to Virginia.
Silent Auction bids were
accepted from Saturday morn
ing, Nov. 8 until 4 p.m. Monday,
Nov. 10 for the lots being offered.
Fifteen lots averaged
$3,166.67 with the top lot bring
ing $6,200.
Lisa Kunz-Womack made the
final bid to purchase the top sell
ing consignment of Phillip
Hulsey, Cedartown, Ga. The con
tending bidder was Graeme
Horne, Victoria, Australia, via
the Internet.
The buyer will select first
choice female sired by either
Altheas Les Pitino Al-Top-ET,
PTI +314 or Altheas Select-ET,
PTI +345 out of Excellent - 90%
Poplar Top Oh Baby Baby.
“Baby Baby” is the number
one cow on the November 1997
PTI list at +5BB. Her dam,
Poplar Top Baby Brass ranks
third on the same list and the
third dam, Sooners Yankee

Keymar, Md.
“Celeste” earlier this year
broke the United States milk
record with a 365 day record at 6
years, 7 months of 38,030 lbs.

1,333 lbs. Protein. The resulting
heifer will have a PA of
