Volunteers honored included Debbie Davis, Springfield; Cathy MacPhail, Newtown Square; Don na O’Keefe, Havcrtown; and Judith Boody, Newtown Square. James Van Patton, formerly of Ridley Township, was honored for five years of service at the dinner. 4-H State Winners Attend National Conference Six state winners were select ed to represent Delaware in the annual National 4-H Congress, held in Memphis, Tenn., from Nov. 28 to Dec. 2. The trip was awarded to rec ognize outstanding 4-H youth and build skills in leadership and community service More than 1,000 youths, age 14 to 19, attended the conference, which included educational seminars, multi-cultural events and ser vice projects. Participants repre senting 48 states and two terri tories had the opportunity to participate m a nationally tele vised town hall meeting that explored issues facing today's youth. The theme of this year's Congress was "Learning to Lead, Leading to Learn in a Diverse World." Fifteen-year-old Lindsay Armstrong, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Daniel Armstrong of Wilmington, won the sate award for leadership. A student at Ursuline Academy, she has held leadership positions in Junior Council and m her 4-H club, the Highlanders. She has completed projects in public presentation, food and nutrition, clothing and textiles and citizenship. In 1996 she received the Presidential Award for Service, and this year she won the Hugh O'Bnan Leadership Award at the state and international levels. She enjoys the performing arts and has performed in community theaters and a traveling theater group. The 4-H Foundation sponsored her trip to Memphis, Dawn Cannon, 15, daughter of Patrick and Kathleen Cannon of Greenwood, was selected for the Fashion Revue in Memphis. As a member of the Greenwood high-Flyers 4-H Club, she com pleted projects in clothing and textiles, construction a variety of clothing articles, teaching sewing to younger members. This year being crowned Fashion Revue Queen for Sussex County. Her leadership activities have included serving as president of her 4-H club and vice-president of the Junior Honor Society at Milford High School. She plans to be a finan cial planner or accountant. Her trip to Memphis was sponsored by Harrington Moose. Newark resident Katie Evans, 15, daughter of Robert and Nora Evans, won for overall achievement. She has served as vice-president of Junior Council and, as a member of the Meado- Larks 4-H Club, has participat ed in many projects including clothing and textiles, food and nutrition, health and swine. She attends Ursuline Academy and plans to be a high school teacher. Her trip was sponsored by the 4- H Foundation. Heather Holmes, a 16-year old member of the Greenwood High-Flyers 4-H Club, is the daughter of Marty and Sherry Holmes. This Greenwood resi dent, who won the state award for baking bread, has completed projects in food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, leadership and citizenship. She has served as president of both her 4-H Club and the Junior Honor Society at her school, Woodbridge High. She plans to become a physical therapist. Brandy Holz, daughter of Edward and Tina Holz, has par ticipated in the sheep project for seven years and this year won the state award for sheep. This 17-year-old member of the AA 4- H Country Club has completed projects in sewing, food and nutrition, leadership and citi zenship. A Camden resident, she attends Caesar Rodney high School and plans to major in ani mal science and agribusiness in college, her trip to Congress was sponsored by the Junior Livestock Auction Buyers. Karla Levinson, daughter of Lawrence and Anda Levinson of Wilmington, won the state award for community service. This 16-year-old, who attends Dickinson High School, has par ticipated in projects on food and nutrition, clothing and textiles, public presentation, citizenship and leadership. She has held positions of leadership in the Highlanders 4-H Club and in her school’s Honor Society, and she currently serves as secre tary for Junior Council. Earlier this year, she attended the week-long National Conference of youth in Government.
