The end-of-year results of Pennsylvania Dairy Herd Improvement records for 1997 (open to the public) show that one of the Pa.DHIA top-10 production herds (on a rolling herd basis) of the past several years has made it to the number one position, while a cow owned by Frederick Farms, of Martinsburg was the top producer for protein and milk. The top Pa.DHIA herd rolling herd average for protein and milk belonged to Jacob 111 and Sally Tanis of Centre Hall, whose 95-cow herd made an average of 31,393 pounds milk, 1,171 pounds of fat and 984 pounds of protein. The herd ranked second for average fat production. Second place herd for protein production on a rolling herd basis was the 75-cow herd of Fantasyland Hoslteins in Robesonia, which had received Pa.DHIA’s top management award several years ago. That herd was also ranked third in the state for milk production with an overall RHA 0f30,285 pounds of milk, 1,1042 pounds of fat and 972 pounds of protein. The top, per-cow fat-producing herd was that of Blossom Hollow farm in Com modore, with 35 cows each making 24,543 pounds of milk, 1,174 pounds fat, and 771 pounds of protein. The third-place herd for average production per cow for protein and fat was own ed by R V and SV Hollensbead of Mercersburg. Their 145 cows made 29/135 pounds of milk, 1,163 pounds of fat and 966 pounds of protein. The second place leader for milk production was the Scot Lyn Dairy in Rome, with 45 cows making an average of 30,877 pounds of milk, 1,147 pounds of fat and 959 pounds of protein. 1997 Top Rolling Herd Averages By Lbs. She made 47,256 pounds of milk, 1,290 pounds of protein and 2,153 pounds of fat Juniperdale Farm in Nazareth bad two high producing cows. Its Lara cow made 47,305 pounds of milk, 1,283 pounds of protein and 2,153 pounds of fat to be listed as second for milk and third for fat The farm’s Amereto cow mad 44,229 pounds of milk, 1,331 pounds of protein and 2,464 pounds of fat to be listed as second highest for fat production. Solid Gold Holsteins of Emlenton had the second and third place protein cows for Pa J)HIA. The farm’s Lacey cow made 44,774 pounds of milk, 1,464 pounds of pro tein and 1,936 pounds of fat Its Devin cow made 43,832 pounds milk, 1,424 pounds of protein and 1,893 pounds of fat The lowest somatic cell count in milk is also recognized because it indicates milk quality. The lowest SCC for the year was 69,000 on a 51-cow mixed herd of Holsteins owned by Art and Barb Rutledge of Damascus. Second for SCC recognition was a 41-cow herd of registered Holsteins owned by Greg and Sheryl Seeley of Canton, which was tied with the 45-cow herd of regis tered Holsteins owned by Ron and Beth Ruffaner of Worthington.
