As part of the 1997 Pennsylvania Crops Conference held early this year in Grantville, com mercial com growers were polled on a proposed statewide com checkoff program. Of 51 growers voting, 39 cast ballots in favor of a checkoff. In that environment, it was significant, perhaps, that Law rence Meeks of Carroll Coun ty, Md. was on hand and on the program to tell Pennsyl vania producers “what’s hap pening with the feed grains checkoff in Maryland.” Meeks is president of the Maryland Grain Producers Utilization Board, which ad ministers the assessment pro gram on com and feed grains in the state. The Maryland check off rate is one half of one per cent of the price of the grain ■JCORNIUK (Continued from Page 1) Conference, State College. The money is limited to use on research, edu cation and market development projects, at both the state and national levels. The Maryland checkoff in cludes a rcfimd provision with refund requests varying “pretty much with the weather,” Meeks told his Pennsylvania audience. “Five to 10 percent in good years and as high as 18 percent in dry or bad years, like 1991.” Meeks said the Utilization Board annually funds several youth education programs. Their importance, he noted, was evidenced on a recent visit to the state legislature in Anna polis. In 10 offices, only one person had any experience with agriculture, he said, and that was in public relations for Farm Calendar Wi'dncschn, Jaiunin 21 Lime, Fertilizer, and Pesticide Grantville. The Maryland Grain Utiliza tion Board annually receives between 40 and 50 requests for funding. A total of 34 projects were funded for 1997, includ ing $41,000 for a wide variety of education projects.
