The Friday, October 3 evening arena program at the 1997 Key stone International Livestock Exposition, will be the “Challenge of the Breeds.” This show pits nine internationally recognized horse breeds, the Appaloosa, Arabian, the Paint, Half-Arabian, Morgan, Palomino, Pinto, Quarter Horse, Percheron, and Saddlebred, against each other in an evening of fun and mastery. These animals have been chosen by their respec tive breed associations. In order to compete, the horse must be owned by a Pennsylvania resident. The event is sponsored in part by the Fieldstone Meadows Horse Farm, Dallastown, Pa. The six events in which each horse can be entered include: A. Pleasure Driving Horses are asked to perform both ways at a walk and trot. B. English Pleasure In Eng lish tack, horses will perform both directions at a walk, trot and a canter. C. Hunter Hack—ln addition to Sponsors Assist In Production of KILE The Keystone International Livestock Exposition is in its 41st year at Harrisburg. The Exposition is recognized nationally as a show case for the nation’s top beef cattle, swine, sheep, and horses. It will be held at the Farm Show Complex in Harrisburg on October 1-6. To date, 71 major sponsors have committed funds to support the Keystone International Livestock Exposition. A sponsorship prog ram was put together a few years ago to assist in funding the show as well as to promote the show. With the revamped KILE program, many opportunities exist for agri cultural companies and individu als to get involved. Fieldstone Meadow Horse Farm, York, PA is sponsoring the “Challenge of the Breeds” show on Friday evening in the large arena. D. Western Pleasure—ln west ern gear, the horse will walk, jog, and lope in both directions. E. Western Riding—The horse performs a prescribed course which demonstrates the perfor mance of a well-mannered ranch horse. F. Barrel Racing A timed event in the clover-leaf pattern is performed by the horse. The horses will be judged at each of these events on a point sys tem by a qualified judge. The van ning horse will receive the distinc tion of being the Keystone Sove reign Champion and will receive an award of $l,OOO. The Reserve Champion will be awarded $5OO. Placings will be paid through eigth place. This marks the eighth time that a “Challenge of the Breeds” event has been held in Pennsylvania. The Draft Horse teams will also per form in competitive classes during Horse, Morgan, Palomino and Pin to against each other in an evening of fun and mastery. A total of 12 horses chosen by their respective breed associations will be entered in the competition. The “Keystone Sovereign Champion” will then receive $l,OOO. Sponsoring the Kiddie Pedal Pull is Evergreen Tractor Sales at Myerstown, PA Dennis Grum bine, owner, reports that he chose the Kiddie’s Pedal Pull to sponsor because of the close tie-in with the equipment business. The Pedal Pull will be held on Saturday, October 4, at 3 p.m. The event is open to children between the ages of 3 and 8. Kessler Meats has chosen to sponsor our daily “Kessler’s Bar nyard,” as it is called, where kids of all ages can touch and pet bar nyard animals. Kessler’s Meats is located in Lemoyne, PA. They were the wiflher of the Classic Hitch Series in 1995. They come from Nashua, lowa and put on a dazzling display with these 2,200-pound giants. Horse Pulling Contest New to the 1997 Keystone International Livestock Expos ition is the Keystone Interna tional Horse Pull contest. Forty teams from all over the country will compete in this traditional Draft Horse event on Wednes day, October 1. The event be gins at 6 in the large arena. A $5 admission will be charged. The horses will be divided into two classes. The light weight team class will be 3,225 pounds and less and the heavy weight team will be over 3,225 pounds. Premiums will be paid through 20th place with the first prize in each class being $5OO. So come cheer on your favorite team at this new 1997 livestock show event. Saturday Is Kid’s Day at KILE The Keystone International Livestock Exposition has chosen Saturday. October S, 1997 as a spe cial day for children. Daily attrac tions continue throughout Kid’s Day including Professor' Paddy Whach’s One Man Band. The pro fessor is animated and funny, he plays a mechanical collection of over SO pounds of musical gizmos, noise makers and special effects. V917-D3 Heavy Hitch On Saturday, October 4th, the Farm Show Arena will come alive with the sound of thundering hooves. The Heavy Hitch Classic will begin at 7:00 p.m. in the Large Arena of the Farm Show Complex. An admissin fee of $5.00 per person will be charged at the gate. Hitches come from five states and represent five major draft horse breeds. Also appearing at the Saturday evening shows will be the “Historic Coast to Coast Hitch” formerly the Reminisce Hitch. Their arena will be a real asset to the show. They were the winner of the Gassic Hitch Series in 1995. In 1996, over 200 six-horse hitchers were entered in the 45 qualifying shows across the United States and Canada. The Keystone International Livestock Exhibition is again a qual ifying show for the 1997 year. Prize money will be awarded at the KILE Show. The North American Six-Horse Hitch Classic Series is the ultimate driving event in the heavy horse world. The Keystone International Livestock Exposition has been chosen as one of 4S recognized Qualifying Shows on the Classic Series Show circuit. Each week long providing a unique ex perience for the children to actual ly touch and hold farm animals such as a calves, sheep, donkey and baby pigs. A farmer will be there to answer any questions youngsters may have. Lebanon Valley National Bank is sponsoring the “AgriKid Olym pics” at noon. The Olympics is a fun time for kids as they compete is such farm-related events as Sack Races, Wheelbarrow Races, Laughing Contest, Horseshoe Pitch and Hog-Calling Contest Classic Set year all across America, six-horse hitches perform at state fairs and agri cultural exhibitions to accumulate points for their region and beyond competing at Qualifying Shows spread across Canada and the United States. The competition builds to a climax at the end of the year when the high-point hitches are invited to compete in the final competition, the Classic Series. The winner of the Classic Series All Breed Trophy is considered by many to be the best six-horse hitch in the world. The four major draft horse breeds that compete in the Classic Series are Belgians, Percherons, Clydesdales, and Shires. Hitches are judged on con formation, manners, the proper fit and cleanliness of the harness, the appro priateness of the wagon, and the hitch’s way of going. The stride of a draft horse at the walk should be long, one that covers ground, with plenty of snap. The trot should be stylish, giving the distinct impression of power and energy. The real winner of the Classic Six- Horse Hitch Series is the spectator. Over 400 draft horses will be on dis play and it is expected that over fifteen six-horse hitches will be in competi tion for the Classic at the Keystone. The Kiddie Pedal-Power Trac tor Pull, sponsored by Evergreen Tractor Sales at Myerstown, is a special event very similar to the big tractor pulls seen at many county furs. Children must pre register at 1:30 for the event which will be held at 3 p.m. The event is limited to 80 participants. So be sure to sign up early.
