A2O-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 20, 1997 Supreme Swine Named At York Fair Open Show JOYCE BUPP York Co. Correspondent YORK (York Co.) No breed made a complete sweep of the su preme banners at the 1997 York Fair’s open swine show, with the three top award winners represent ing a cross-section of the quality pigs on exhibit Judge Frank Fees cr, Taneytown, Maryland, in pick ing the winners, offered reasons for his supreme selections tying swine breeder goals to the retail pork consumer. Named supreme boar was the March-bom Chester White exhib ited by Michael and Gene Weber, Shrewsbury. It topped a field of breed winners that included the Greg and Beth Innerst family’s Berkshire champion, Rodge Bankert’s Duroc contender, the Hampshire and Landrace cham pions of Donna Strawbridge, Lar ry Feeser’s Poland winner, the Cornbower family’s Yorkshire and Weber’s own contending Spotted champion. Supreme female was also a heated runoff of eight separate breed contenders, with Feeser’s final nod going to the Hampshire entry of Donna Strawbridge and her son J.C. Also in competition were the Innerst family’s Berk shire champion, Weber’s Chester, the Poland champion of Cheryl Bennecoff, Wilson’s Yorkshire winner and Strawbridge’s com peting Spotted and Landrace breed winners. Topping the heavily-contended barrow contest was the crossbred champion of junior exhibitor Mike Burrell, who also won the junior market class with the same Duroc gilt. Though a purebred, the win ning market animal showed as a crossbred because it was a gilt. In market swine contention from the other breeds were Innerst’s Berk shire, the Cornbower Family’s Chester While, Bankert’s Duroc, the Landracc champion of Charles Griest, the Weber family’s Spot ted entry and Donna Straw bridge’s Yorkshire. A final pairs contest among the breeds put the crossbred entry from Wilson’s Yorkshirees on top, with the Berkshire pair named the reserve winners.
