Consoldition discussions by four of the nation’s largest dairy marketing cooperatives took a major step this week when the corporate boards of the organizations voted to present the terms of consoldition to their memberships. A favorable response would lead the to the for mation of a new dairy marketing cooperative to be named Dairy Fanners of America (DFA). DFA would market about 21 percent of the nation’s milk supply. The consolidation, targeted for Jan. 1,1998, depends upon the successful vote within each cooperative. The voting process is to be com pleted by Dec. 1. 1997. DFA’s objective is to enhance economies of scale and to expand markets for member milk. Cooperatives involved in the consolidation are Mid-America Dairymen Inc. (Mid-Am) of Springfield, Mo.; Milk Marketing Inc. (MMI) of Strongsville, Ohio; Western Dairymen Coopera tive Inc. (WDCI) of Thorton, Colo., and Salt Lake City, Utah; and the Southern Region of Associated Milk Producers Inc. (AMPI) of Arlington, Texas. York.
