GAIL STROCK Mifflin Co. Correspondent REEDS VILLE (Mifflin Co.) The Mifflin County Youth Fair Livestock auction proceeds to taled $92,837.15 this year. But before the first animal step ped into the ring, FFA students from the Juniata-Mifflin Counties Area Vocational-Technical School offered several items for auction to help finance their trip to the National FFA convention in Kansas City. Of the items auc tioned, a limited edition F-20 John Deere went for $125 and a hand made oak swing sold for $l5O. Later in the sale, a gallon of milk from the grand champion Holstein was sold for $2BO to benefit the fair committee. The grand champion beef own ed by Emily Vandeigrift was pur chased by the Belleville Livestock Market for $3,378.50. Jada Kauff man’s reserve champion steer was sold to Hoss’s Steak and Sea House for $3,120. The average price for steers was $94,96 with the champions, $86.60 without the champions. Natalie Aurand’s grand champ ion market lamb sold to Eastern Industries for $666.75. Shane Renninger’s reserve champion lamb went to Marlin Fields Real Estate for $342.20. The average price for lambs was $149 with the champions, $137 without the champions. The grand champion swine sold for $982.80. Big Valley Feed and Grain purchased it from Vaughn Kanagy. Jada Kauffman’s reserve champion swine sold to Hoss’s Steak and Sea House for $925.20. Eastern Industries purchased Bobbie Dair’s grand champion market goat for $279.50, while the reserve champion goat owned by Becky Seitz went to Paul Brown Excavating for $217.75. GAY BROWNLEE Somerset Co. Correspondent MEYERSDALE (Somerset Co.) Lucas S vonavec of Rock wood had the grand champion market steer, a 1,215-pound crossbred, and grand champion swine, a 245-pound crossbred, at the Somerset County Fair. Heidi Svonavec, 17, his sister, followed closely on her 15-year old brother’s trail with the reserve grand champion swine, a crossbred weighing 219 pounds. Nicole Baer’s crossbred, weighing 1,245 pounds, was the reserve grand champion steer and the county bred champion. Jacob Luce had the grand champion lamb, a Suffolk crossbred that weighed 121 pounds. University Studies Ag Industry BEL AIR, Md.—The Universi ty of Maryland’s Department of Agricultural and Resource Eco nomics is conducting a study to identify and analyze several high value agriculture enterprises suit able for Harford County. Scheduled for completion by June 30, 1998, the study is expected to yield comprehensive data for the Harford County Office of Economic Development (OED), the Harford County Cooperative Extension Service, and agricultural community mem bers. These groups will use the data to compare the value, cost, and potential market for such businesses in Harford County. Other sections of the ini tiative are regulation and legisla tion, marketing and education. The initiative has been developed over the past two years to enhance the economic viability of the ag industry in Harford County. OED, along with the Harford Couhty Agricultural Task Force, will be the primary advisers to the study team. The task force is com posed of representatives from sev eral different agricultural-related government and industry groups.
