The Chesapeake Bay Founda tion (CBF) strongly and enthusias tically supports statements made recently by Senator Robert C. Jubeliter calling for comprehen sive, statewide standards for cor porate hog farming operations according to a news release Thursday. In addition, CBF believes that a moratorium on new, large animal operations in Pennsylvania is a reasonable and essential interim measure until the statewide stan dards that Jubelirer called for are in place. CBF believes these stan dards should include ground and surface water monitoring, siting criteria, regular inspections at the facilities, assurance of adequate land for manure application, and manure storage standards that pro tect water quality and public health. “Pennsylvania is totally unpre pared for an influx of these large animal operations. Fanning opera tions of this magnitude are not adequately covered by current and pending environmental protection TANEYTOWN FARM EQUIPMENT 2325 Feeser Road 410-751-1500 Bush H Ki Kutter Cat 977 H Dozer, Runs Excellent $6,500 USED MOWERS Woods CBO Pull Type . $650 Woods Cadet 72 Woods Cadet s’PullTVpe $6OO Ford7’3pt Southern 6’ 3 pt. "These corporate operations not only pose a threat to water quality, but also threaten the viability of small and mid-sized livestock forms,” said Garber. “Goals established by EPA and the Chesapeake Bay states to stem the flow of nutrients to the Bay by the year 2000 are already in jeo pardy and are further threatened by an increase in factory forming operations.” said Jolene E.
