The timing is most appropriate. Can you imagine celebrating Easter during the dead of winter? Or at harvest time? And you don’t want to even think about stepping on one of those colored, hard-boiled eggs that got lost during an annual Eas ter Egg hunt in ... July. Yuck. As fortune has it, our comer of the world observes the Eastertime renewal of Christian spirituality hand-in-hand with the renewal of life around us. Just as we feel almost unbearably weary of the brownness and drabness of winter. Mother Nature unveils her annual blessing of fresh, new greenery and bursts of bright color. Few items capture the spirit of the season of renewal better than the death-to-life promise encapsu lated in a flower bulb. A boxful of bulbs arrived in our mailbox last fall, a birthday gift sent from the other side of the country. Along with some other surprises in the package was an assortment of tulip bulbs, daffodil bulbs, and hyacinth bulbs—a gift box of promises. One bright fall afternoon, with a chill in the air and hints of worse to come, I potted up the assorted promises. Groups of four or five daffodils, or a half-dozen tulips, or a single hyacinth were tucked into CLAIM VOUR BARGAIIN RPfflBS 20 PIECE SET OF DISHES I 31 * 4 Bl 31 sSoRetail Value With Basset or Sena bedding purchase only We Absolutely Have the Best Prices on Bedding BASSETT MATTRESS & BOX SPRING lln i Mi. i , I' i ;i i i ‘ln hI - ■ .I li i■■ i 1. 1 11. 1 . nil'll M.I In ■ 1 1, 1 ' 11 ''n ,n i unl\ "I mu I till } im 11 plu, ,mi ill ,il nn < liiii l^i Reg Rot OUR CASH PRICE SPECIAL Nivii'- n r iH'i 'is Mm r $129.95 ' V L'Knihli; 7:’ 1 ) <) r , S 1 59.95 Ouoimi MfV'‘l r . svi)') r i 5219.95 Kini) $11) ( )9 r ) r , Ivil'l'F, $279.95 ( MPO N 6 SERTA MATTRESS &* BOX SPRUNG Mi.' Then, the pots were all thoroughly watered and set outside to drain well, so the soil would be damp but not soggy. For a week or two before. I’d been saving the cardboard cases from the individual paper towels we use to wash and dry the cows’ udders prior to milking. A couple of assorted sized pots went into each box, making them easier to move around and handle. Then, over, under and around the pots went a thorough packing of Mother Nature’s own organic, biodegradable, insulating material scoops of the dried maple leaves that were piling up in the yard. Ultimately, the bulbs were to be stored through the winter in the ground cellar, where they would develop growth slowly in refrigerator-like conditions. But, the ground cellar was still pretty warm, and I was concerned they would root and send up tops too quickly. So, the boxes of potted bulbs instead were stacked temporarily in the woodshed. In that unheated, but somewhat sheltered, environ ment they would begin to root and develop much the same as if they were planted in the ground. Ideal- ly, the leaf insulation would pre vent them from freezing if the temperatures were to suddenly go Arctic. The “plan” was to leave them in the woodshed only for a couple of weeks, then as the season grew colder, move them to the ground cellar for the rest of the winter. Except that I sort of forgot that they were there. And didn’t remember until weeks later—and several days into one of the few stretches of winter’s really bitter weather we experienced. Hoping for the best, I dug through one boxful of leaves and found that the top of the soil in each pot was just slightly frozen. A couple of quick wheelbarrow-trips later, the boxes of potted promises had been promptly hustled to safer storage. Underground. A few weeks ago, another check down through the boxes of leaves unearthed vigorous foliage sprouting out of the pots of daffo dils. Again, they got a hasty move. This time, it was to the cool floor of the greenhouse, where the foliage could “green up” before the bud stalks began appearing. By last week, the hyacinths and tulips were likewise begging to be let out into the spring sunshine. Professional growers scheduled their bulbs with infinite planning and care. Extremely cold and/or extremely dark, dreary weather can play havoc with the schedul ing of bringing Easter bulbs to bloom. But growers must have their pots of.flowers at blooming peak within a few day schedule or lose the crop. Thanks to their skills, we have lovely Easter pot ted plants to celebrate this blessed holiday with blooms that remind us that new life arises from what appears to be dead. ; BEDROOM ; ; closeout ; , Arm., Dresnr, Mirror, Nightstand, & i ■ - * ■< nT< ‘ 1 TWIN /DOUBLE ' FUTON BUNK BED > 1 Trailer Load • Dealer Refusal with 8' 1 1 Futon Mattress , ' WW° k .Reg Ret $89995,fi i [ !
