The MUN report supplied by Pa. DHIA enables him to look at past history and make management changes for the betterment of the future. Two of the reports used most by George are the SCC report as well as the MUN report The following charts and graphs show statistical informa tion gathered on 160 TMR feed cows from 9/12/95 through 2/4/1997 at Marburger Dairy. Chart number 1 is a production history of milk, percent fat per cent protein, MUN anaylsis, and ISO day adjusted average. Often with newly introduced technology Water Bowls with Instant Recovery! DHIA has saved me $B,OOO per year in just protein savings alone, which pays for milk testing services two fold," stales George Cudoc Jr., farm manager at Marburgpr Dairy Incorporated, in Buter County. “The culling rate has dropped from 35 percent to 18 percent within the time frame of 1996,” George said. He said he contributes these fig ures to knowing how to feed the cows better by implcmcntion of die MUN tool. Since beginning to test for MUN in October 1995, the radon has been adjusted from 19 percent protein down to a 16.4 tot al mixed ratioii anaylsis. As a direct result of these changes, days to first service on the Marburger herd dropped from 90 to 79 days while the conception rate improved dramatically from 28 to 49 percent It WB9SG with optional s plash guard some personal observations can be as important as text book information. Dr. Ferguson, at the 1996 annu al Pennsylvania State DHIA meet ing, gave evidence that as MUN levels rise, milk production goes down. Also, the normally accepted range for MUN is 10-14. Starting in October of 1995, Marberger Dairy Inc. started on the MUN program. For the first year they were able to make changes in MUN values after we saw what they were. Unfortunately, this after-effect ry Halstead, technician and herd manager George Cudoc Jr. review records to track milk urea nitrogen levels and com pare them to production. As seen on the chan, on 17 observations milk produc tion decreases when MUN level increased, and milk production increases when MUN levels decrease most of the time, espe cially the further we fall out of the normally accepted range. To illustrate this further, included is a graph “A” showing this variation. So here we are with this infor mation, but how do we use it? (Continued Next Week)
