The spotlight shone on 4-H at the annual Dauphin County Coopera tive Extension meeting held Mon day night About 300 people mingled in the Founder’s Hall at the Milton Hershey School, where 4-H mem bers set up displays of club activi ties. The evening festivities included a food reception, award presentations, and a viewing of the newly released video featuring Dauphin County 4-H. The 4-H program has had a nine percent increase in enrollment since last year. About 2,338 mem bers and 780 volunteers make up the program. While the 4-H program prospers under the many volunteer leaders and parents who contribute time and energy to the program, Fred Rudy, extension agent, said that others often assist the program in behind-the-scenes duties. One of those is Dr. Richard Guise, who for Numerous 4-H clubs set up displays such as v jrse ai y exit.. Rudy presented Guise with a Spirit of 4-H Award. Other award winners included Marlin and Ellen Brubaker, for their many years as 4-H leaders; Kim Garris of Channel 27, who produced several television spots on extension programs; and Richard Hand, for his agricultural program leadership not only in the county but also the state. Various perspectives of the 4-H program were given by school administrators, volunteers, and members. School officials making an impact on the program included Joann Griffin, principal of Foose Elementary School; Bob Hassin ger, principal of a Halifax Middle School; Marcia Paterson, director of the ag and environmental educa tion program at Milton Hershey School; and Dr. William Lepley, president of Milton Hershey School. Francis Shoop, who has been a 4-H volunteer for 27 years, told how she has watched her children and grandchildren excel in 4-H programs. “Now they’re gone and I’m still here,” the 75-year-old vol unteer leader said. Katy Deveney, a 12-year member who studies occupational therapy at Elizabethtown College, told of the important role 4-H play ed in her life and the many side benefits that she continues to reap from her involvement in the program. these included public speaking ability, confidence in meeting new people, organization, delegation, record keeping, time management, work ethics, and other life skills. Randy Greider, president of the board of directors for Dauphin County Cooperative Extension, was honored for his six years of service. Newly elected to the extension board were Audrey Maule and Jer ry Miller.
