Kathy has emphasized com munity service as part of her horse club work and recently was an or ganizer of the Warren County 4-H Competitive Horse Trail program. Sheryl Vanco of Bear Lake was honored for her 10 years of work with teen leadership program. She has also volunteered for dairy judging, demonstration judging, dairy instructor club, and a past development council member. Dale and Delores Timco of Tidi oute Nature Watchers, and Julie Salapek of Warren, a leader in three clubs Ham Handlers, Teen Council, and Keystone Con nection. School program volunteers honored for 4-H embryology in the classroom were Diane Martin of North Warren, Sue Cronmiller of South Street School, Yvonne Lee of Lander School, and Janet Mack of the YoungsviUe Elemen tary School. Volunteer Deb Navas of Warren was recognized for reaching more than 800 students with her “Hive and Honey Bee” demonstration. The 1996 Friends of 4-H Award was presented to Warren County Fair Board for their support of 4-H with use of fair grounds for educa tional workshops and volunteer help for 4-H programs. Fair Board Vice President Bob Hollabaugh and Secretary Jean Hollabaugh ac cepted the award. Sanford Smith, extension agent, recognized the Jim Salapek family of Warren and the Craig Wilcox family of Russell for hosting inter national 4-H adults in 1995-1996 year. Jamie Salapek and Kelsi Wilcox responded with words on what the experiences have meant for their families. The 1996 Pennsylvania 4-H State Competitive Trail Ride, known as “The Keystone Ride,” was held on Sept 20-21 in Roth rock State Forest The 27.2-mile trail was checked on foot on horseback, and by ve hicle. The 1996 Keystone Ride had participants from 11 counties in Pennsylvania. All riders receive participation awards while com peting in their age division. Competitive trail riding takes place on well-marked trails at a timed pace. Judges observe the ride, inspecting horses before and after the competition. The ride is not a race against time. Scoring is based on the overall condition of the horse, with points subtracted for failure to complete each seg ment of the ride within the speci fied time. Winning first place in the junior riding horse division was Adams County 4-H member Kate Brady. Kat is a third year member of the Equest 4-H Club. She is the daughter of Don and Sharon Brady of Hanover.
