A32-Lanca«ter Farming, Saturday, October 5, 1996 LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Farming Staff NEW HOLLAND (Lancaster Co.) Brandon Ziegler won championships for his market lamb at many county fairs, but Wednes day was the Erst time he and his brother Corby ever tackled the New Holland Fair. Brandon’s entries resulted in both grand champion trophies for market and for non-sale lamb to add to his expanding collection of trophies. Corby took the reserve champion non-kale market lamb and the reserve medium weight champion market lamb. The no-name sheep are some the Ziegler family had purchased from the West. According to Brandon’s dad Dean, the family is relunctant to divulge exactly where because, “we have a good source, and if we tell others, they’d buy ’em there, and next we’ll need to pay over the top prices for them.” Taking reserve grand champion honors in the market class was Becki Day. Judge Travis Werley, ag loan office for Lebanon Valley Bank, said that Becki’s sheep was the longest-bodied lamb he saw this year and that it was ideally condi tioned for a heavyweight. Howev er, Werley went with the Ziegler lamb because he believes it most ideally exemplifies what the mark et is looking for. In her first year of showing, Becki placed first in the beginner’s Showmanship champions, from left, are Jennlffer Zim merman, intermediate division; Keith Bollinger, senior divi sion; and Beckl Day, junior division. In the no-sale sheep competition Judged by Travis Werley, the Ziegler brothers, Brandon, left, showed the grand champion, and Corby showed the reserve. Ziegler Shows Champion Market And No-Sale Lambs At New Holland division of showmanship. The 15-ycar-old is the daughter of Cliff and Anna Day of New Holland. Because the family does not live on a farm, Becki said that she kept her two sheep in a shed in the back yard. The neighbors, she said, were delighted to have sheep in the neighborhood. Taking top honors in the senior division of showmanship was Keith Bollinger, son of Raymond and Sharon Bollinger of Ephrata. Keith also showed the grand champions in the Cheviot and Suf folk breeds. It was another big night for vet eran winner Jenniffer Zimmerman who used her champion South down ram to take grand champion of all breeding sheep, and she won showmanship in the intermediate division. Her brother Jimmy showed his Hampshire ewe to take the reserve champion over all breeds. The Zimmermans are the child ren of Jay and JoAnn Zimmerman of Akron. The siblings have used their breeding stock to win at many local shows. Travis Redmond of Mohton took the reserve champion ram title with his Shropshire champion ram and also had the champion ewe in that breed. Other breed winners included Alexandra Lauffer who showed the champion Romney ewe and ram, and Radell Peters who showed the champion Dorset ram Judge Travis Werley selects Brandon Ziegler’s lamb as the grand champion market lamb and Beckl Day’s as the reserve. and ewe and the hampion Jacobs ewe.
