The Mary land Holstein Association’s 3rd Annual Picnic was attended by about 225. It was held on a beauti ful, breezy Saturday last month at Windsor Manor Farm home of state president Jason Myers, his wife Donna and their daughters Kelly and Kristin. Something of interest on dis play was some antique DeLaval milking equipment and memora bilia. Thanks to the following families who put together the dis play of some of their unusual items; Jason Myers, Joe Schwartz beck, Gary Derr and Charles la ger. For example, there was an au thentic, gold-framed 1907 tin De- Laval sign, tin cut-out cows, LAURELTON (Union Co.) The 18th Annual Union County 4-H and FFA Junior Livestock Sale was held at the West End Fairgrounds recently. This year’s sale grossed $40,325, which easily broke the record that was set in 1994. Forty-four Union County youth participated in this year’s sale. A total of 11 rabbit meat pens, IS steers, 28 hogs, and 41 market lambs were sold by auctioneers Bryan D. Imes. Barry Sands, and William Wolfe. This year’s grand champion <ipu. nog. Juyer is Mlffllnburg Bank and Trust Co. (rep. by Robert Valentine) and owner is Nor- match holder. DeLaval butter chum, oil can and various adver tising signs, etc. Consultants Clarence Stauffer and Tom Dum were on hand rep resenting the National Holstein Association. Dr. Kevin McNew of the U. of Md. was available to dis cuss dairy futures on the Coffee, Sugar and Cocoa Exchange and the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. A delicious catered meal, free of charge and complete with ice cream, was enjoyed by all. A num ber of donated door prizes were given throughout the day. Every one relaxed and enjoyed them selves. There was a meeting of the Junior Holstein Club, conducted by president Mark lager, with over 65 in attendance. The Calf Raffle Sale Is A Record market steer was purchased by Robert Hamm of the Country Cupboard Restaurant and Shops in Lewisburg for $3.75 a pound. The 1,270-pound Angus steer was owned by 4-H member Traci Gessner. Traci is the daughter of Ray and Linda Gessner of Mifflinbuig. The reserve champion market steer was purchased by Jerry Rhoads for Wayne Feeds ■ — Rhoads Mills of Selinsgrove and Milton for $2.60 a pound. The 1,185-pound Angus crossbred (Turn to Pag* A 42) for all juniors up to age 21, spons ored by Select Sires and H.B. Du vall, Inc., was a popular item. The happy winner was 7-year-old Lindsey Murphy of Frederick. She plans to show the calf in the fu ture. The juniors had some fun and games, which included the bale toss, milk chugging, “udder” bal loon toss and milk pint toss. The winning team the Milk Studs consisted of Tom Muller, Josh Sanders, Brett Haines and Paul Albaugh. The current and past two groups of DJ,M.’s were intro duced and received model Holsti cows. Kelly Myers was proud to represent Maryland as a 1996 Finalist in the National Distin guished Junior Member Contest in Fort Worth, Texas.
