814-Lancwtef Farming, Saturday, August 24, 1996 1 LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Farming Staff LAMPETER (Lancaster Co.) — The Lancaster County 4-H Round up held at Lampeter Fairgrounds last week offered Regina Landis a chance to shine* in the sheep competition. The 16-year-old daughter of Abe and Dottie Landis garnered championships in showmanship and fitting, and for her homebred and owned Hampshire breeding sheep that went on to be named supreme champion over all breeds. Competition was intense. Twelve breeds, with a champion from each, resulted in a showdown for the supreme champion tide. Judge Rodney Gilbert, Dela ware Valley College animal sci ence professor, said, “Each bred has its own use and the age differ ences among so many sheep make it difficult to compare, but the sheep that meets the ideal for its breed is a Hampshire.” “It’s the first time I’m showing her. I knew she was exceptional but the competition was tough so I’m really happy,” Regina said. The Landis family has been rais ing Hampshires for 10 years on their Manheim farm. West View Acres. “As soon as this one was bom, we knew that she was good,” Regi na said. The lamb had a hefty start. She weighed 19 pounds at birth com pared to the average of 12 pounds. “It’s been our dream to have a head like that,” Regina’s mom Dottie said of the lamb’s perfect markings that conform to the breed’s ideal. The Landis family has been working to build up their flock by keeping careful records. Although Majesty’s mother had birthed before, the first lamb was nothing like Majesty. This was the first time the mother was sired with one of the flock’s other rams and the family plans to use that ram a lot in future matings. In the market lamb competition, 10-year-old Tiffany Dean worked to hold onto her boisterous lamb named Buster. “He’s a jumper,” Tiffany said, “It’s a lot of work, but it paid off.” The grand champion market lamb was purchased from Tim Heener of Robesonia. Tiffany walked the lamb one to two miles daily at the family’s Strasburg farm. It is only the second year for Tif fany’s participation in 4-H. Although it was the first time Tif fany showed the champion at 4-H Roundup, she showed former champions at Lampeter and Solan co Fairs. The daughter of Gary and Joan Dean, Tiffany raises six crossbred sheep. Amy Bollinger showed a purebred 140-pound Hampshire to claim the reserve grand champion placing. Although Amy has col lected top ribbons at many other fairs, it was the first for the 17-year-old to win at Roundup. The Manheim 4-H’er helps with the family’s 22-head flock at their Manheim farm.
