‘Leed’ Hampshire Outshines 241 Entries At LOU ANN GOOD Lancaster Fanning Staff ' ELIZABETHTOWN (Lancas ter Co.) For the third year in a row, a Leed breeding sheep was named supreme champion sheep overall Wednesday at the Eli zabethtown Fair. However, two considerable dif ferences were evident this year. Instead of the supreme being a Dorset owned by Ann Leed, it was a Hampshire owned by her sister Susan Leed. Still. Ann had the honor of showing the homebred ewe named Jewel because her 11-year-old sis ter was attending Day Camp. The two sisters are the daughters of Bob and Nancy Leed of Lebanon, where they raise Deep Run Hampshires. The Elizabethtown Sheep Show is one of the largest shows in the county, with 241 entries this year. Tim Hall, judge for the day-long event, said that Leed’s Hamp could stand up against the largest sheep shows in the nation and excel The annual sheep show is unique compared to most shows in that both market lamb and selling lamb competitions are held in additition to breeding sheep categories. From these three categories, a supreme champion is selected. The champions in market and selling lamb categories were shown by two Ziegler brothers, sons of Dean and Carol Ziegler of Lidtz. Thirteen-year-old Brandon showed the champion market lamb and his brother Corby showed the selling lamb. Corby’s heavweight selling champion and Brandon’s champ ion market lamb were purchased from lowa. The brothers have eight crossbreds which they exer cise at their Lidtz rural home. When selecting the supreme champion, the judge pointed out four sheen that he thought worthy of die title. These included Cor by’s sale lamb, Jessica Stoltzfiis’s Dorset, and Stephanie Kauffman’s homebred Southdown in addition to Deed’s champion. Jessica, whose 20 Dorsets on the family’s Elizabethtown farm are mostly homebred, said that her champion Dorset was purchased from Van Bair Farms. I just need to leant to deal with it,” she said. Stephanie’s champion South down named Rosie is raised on her grandparents’ Lorraine and George Lewis’s farm in Landisvil le. Her mother Ellen Lewis was well known for showing Hamp shires in previous years. Lewis said that he now advertises his sheep as Lewis’ Hampshires and Stephanie Kauffman’s Southdowns. Seven-year-old Stephanie said that when she walks her sheep, all the neighborhood children in the development surrounding the mea dows come to help her walk them. Keith Bollinger of Ephrata showed champions in both the Cheviot and in the Suffolk divi sions. The 17-year-old raises 22 Cheviots and Suffolks and his brother has an additional 10. The Cheviot aged ewe has been named breed champion for three years at E-town. The Suffolk champion is home bred ewe lamb whose mother was a former champion. The Suffolk also was named champion of its breed at the county 4-H Roundup held last week. The Shropshire champion was a yearling ewe shown by Amy Bol linger of Manheim. The Shrop shire is from her sister Tracy’s FFA chain animal, which was the champion at the E-town Fair two years ago. Inarepeat of last week’s 4-H roundup, Bollinger also showed the reserve champion market lamb at E-town. In Corriedale competition, Tim Walker showed a ewe lamb named Holly. The homebred’s mother named Rosie was a former champ ion at the show. Tim, who is 12and has been showing for three years, is the son of Jeff and Joanne Walk er of Rheems. A Montadale yearling ewe named Jelly Bean' was named champion in the other breed class, which included Columbia and Jacob’s breeds. Thirteen-year-old John Schmidt said that he pur chased the champion Montadale from his 4-H leaders Bill and Joan McCauley. Named Jelly Bean because she was bom on Easter, the yearling was also a champion at 4-H Roundup last week. Exhibitors competed in show manship in four different catego ries. Taking the 16-year-and-over class was Regina Landis. The 16-year-old has started the Fair season out with a bang by claiming showmanship trophies in this and in last week’s 4-H county roundup. In the 13- to 15-year-old divi sion, Jennifer Zimmerman, another frequent winner, took top honors. She pastures a flock of 14 Southdowns in Akron. In the 10- to 12-year-old divi sion, John Tracy from E-town placed first. It was the 11-year old’s first win in showmanship. He is the son of Gerald and Helen and the younger of three boys, who arc frequent winners in sheep competitions. In the novice division, 8-year old Joelynn Donough, despite her age, showed her expertise on keep ing her eye on the judge and her sheep in control. The daughter of Ed and Laßue Donough, her brothers Travis and Ryan raise Suffolks and Hampshires on their Manheim farm.
