VERNON ACHENBACH JR. Lancaster Farming Staff NORTH CORNWALL (Leba non Co.) The Lebanon Area Fair livestock auction netted an overall total of S79,SOS on the sale of 233 animals August 2. One the highlights of the fair, the annual sale is held so that pro ject meat animals raised by youth for competition at the Lebanon Area Fair can be sold and generate funds for the youth, who have his torically used the money to rein vest in their animal projects, or save for further education. Those who purchase animals during the livestock auction don’t have to take possession, but can sell them to auction-selected pro cessors at market rates announced at the sale. This year’s meat processors that bulk-purchased livestock competi tion entries were Walter Dunlap Inc. for market lambs; Hatfield Meats Inc. for market hogs, and Dutchway Farm Markets for steers. According to sale officials, this year’s sale saw continued strong support from historic buyers as well as some welcomed new buyers. Auctioneer for the sale was Har ry Bachman, of Annville, a long time supporter of that sale, as well as a supporter of youth livestock activities in the county, the state Farm Show livestock auction and other youth-benefitting activities. He was helped at the podium by Brian Kreider. The Lebanon Area Fair offers live animal beef, sheep and hog competitions, as well as carcass animal competition, or what is commonly referred to as “foot-to rail” competitions, for sheep and hogs. In the carcass competitions, ani mals are judged live in the ring, and then the animals are slaugh tered and the carcasses evaluated. Considered in the carcass evalu ations are the records documenting the rate of gain of the animals, as well as other considerations as are included in standard commercially used indexing formulas. Only the top hog and lamb car casses are offered for sale at the livestock auction. The meat of the champions is cut and packaged, ready for cooking and consumption. Hogs There were 118 market hogs sold, for a total of $37,770, includ ing the top carcass hog. The top carcass hog, shown by Blaine Brown, was purchased for $225 by the Agricultural Lending Group at Lebanon Valley National Bank.
