SHOW YOUR APPRECIATION A true measure of your worth includes all the benefits others have gained from your success. Cullen Hightower What is the most enjoyable part of a junior livestock show? As a parent, spectator, breeder, or exhibitor, several things may come to mind, and could be diffe rent for each category of participant. I have not had the pleasure, yet, of participating in a junior show as a parent or breeder, but I have had the good fortune of participating as an exhibitor, spectator, and judge. As a judge of junior livestock shows, some of the most memor able experiences I have enjoyed during the last 11 years include naming the grand and reserve champion animals at various shows, judging fitting and show manship classes, and working with young people to help them leant why they or their animal finished at a certain place in the class or show. Obviously, the look on a young ster's face after having been named the exhibitor of the grand • "ft Lebanon Valley Enterprises, inc. Similar to this would be the expression of a youngster who has done all of the fitting of her market lamb and wins the fitting and showmanship class. Having served as a judge of junior livestock shows, one of the most enjoyable parts of a show is not necessarily during the show, but at its conclusion. When a 9-ycar-old youngster comes up to me after the show, extends his right hand, looks me in the eye, and says with the utmost sincerity. “Thank you forjudging our show ... I learned something new and I hope to do a better job next year.” This is one of the truly notable rewards for a junior lives tock show judge. Most of us thank friends and family for gifts we receive when we celebrate a birthday, gradua tion, or anniversary. .We write thank you notes upon receipt of a scholarship, grant, gift, or other monetary or tangible item. The art of writing a note of thanks is cus tomary and is practiced widely in the United States; but how often do we thank someone for a donation of time and effort? As the summer and fall show Manufacturing • Powder Coating • Precast Custom Powder Coatings season gets into full swing during the next few weeks, we need to be mindful to dunk everyone who helped to make junior livestock projects and programs a series of successful educational events. Numerous people donate money in support of ribbons, plaques, and trophies. Other people contribute gifts and supplies to be used as awards. Still, others contribute support by freely giving of their time and effort to ensure the success of a junior livestock show. Show man agement and fair officials, ring men, class and show sponsors, extension agents, vo-ag instruc tors, judges, auctioneers, buyers. 4-H club leaders, brothers, sisters, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and especially parents deserve a special thanks. Most of us remember to thank the judge, show sponsors, ribbon and trophy donors, and most of all the buyers of our project animals; but we may tend to overlook some other important people who helped us with our projects. Did you thank show manage ment and fair officials for provid ing the resources necessary to con duct the fair? Did you thank extension agents, vo-ag instructors, and 4-H club leaders for helping to check-in and weigh animals, making the classes and show order, compiling a sales list, making arrangements for “buy-back programs,” and “scho larship funds”? Did you thank your brother or sister for feeding the pigs when you spent three days at summer camp? Did you thank your parents for All epoxy powder coated taking you to the feeder animal sale, 4-H meetings, the feed mill, and to the fairgrounds for the show? 1 am certain I have omitted in this list someone who deserves to be thanked. Make a list of everyone who helped you in any way throughout the course of the project, and be sure to thank them. Thank them in person with a friendly handshake, or thank them by writing a short note to tell them how you feel. They will appreciate your thoughtfulness. You’ll feel good about yourself knowing that you did the right thing, and others will be more willing to help you in the future. Show your appreciation! Have I thanked vou recently for Md.
