I enjoy reading all of the quotes, quips, and humorous antecdotes that are published in the most widely read monthly publication in the world. I especially enjoy reading the section “Quotable Quotes.” The quotes are often from famous peo ple who have, in a sentence or two, provided valuable insights into life’s little idiosyncrasies. As we look to the future of junior livestock programs and focus our attention toward ethics, potential confrontation, and suc cess, we can learn from the per spectives of others the value of these aspects of life. Ethical Considerations Never assume the obvious is true. William Safire The elegance of honesty needs no adornment. Merry Browne A sense of shame is not a bad moral compass. Colin Powell What lies behind us and what lies before us are small matters compared to what lies within us. Ralph Waldo Emerson We worry about what a child will be tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.—Stacia Tauscher When you teach your son, you teach your son's son. The Talmud The truth of the matter is that you always know the right thing to do. The hard part is doing it. Gen. H. Norman Schwarzkopf What is right is often forgotten by what is convenient. Bodie Thoene The biggest threat to our well being is the absence of moral clari ty and purpose. Rick Shuman Live so that when your children think of fairness and integrity, they think of you. — H. Jackson Brown, Jr. Confrontation Well-timed silence is the most commanding expression. Mark Helprin You can make your world so much larger simply by acknow ledging everyone else's. —Jeanne Marie Laskas We are all inclined to judge ourselves by our ideals; others, by their acts. Harold Nicolson Life shrinks or expands in prop ortion to one's courage. —Anais Nin Hastily made, correct decisions are far better than slowly derived, incorrect decisions. The dilemma is the appropriateness of a hastily made incorrect decision compared with a slowly derived, incorrect one. Anonymous It’s better to be boldly decisive and risk being wrong than to agon ize at length and be right too late. Marilyn Moats Kennedy Proactive or reactive, the important aspect is to be active. Anonymous Often we have no time for our friends, but all the time in the world for our enemies. Leon Uris It is easy to sit up and take notice. What is difficult is getting up and taking action. Al Batt Success A hero is someone we can admire without apology. Kitty Kelley Success is never final, but fai lure can be. Bill Parcells Great successes are built on tak ing your negatives and turning them around. Sumner Redstone Success is how high you bounce when you kit bottom. Gen. George Patton Success is always temporary. When all is said and done, the only thing you'll have left is your char acter. Vince Gill Success is more a function of consistent common sense than it is of genius. An Wang There is no greatness where there is not simplicity, goodness and truth. Leo Tolstoy The "success" of junior lives tock programs depends on "eth ics.” In order to provide programs based on ethical principles, we may have "confrontations" with people who disagree with the col lective ideals of the program.
