Dennis Boyanowsld, President of the Progressive Agriculture Organization (Pro Ag) urges all farm organiza tions to accelerate their sup port of the Northeast Dairy Compact Boyanowski, a dairy far mer from Laceyville. reported today that Pro Ag will con tinue to consider any options that will improve prices to all dairy farmers. The Compact is a legal entity in all 6 New England States and recently was added to the New Farm Bill which passed Congress and was signed into law by President Clinton. According to Arden Tewksbury, Manager of Pro Ag. the compact allows the six New England States to form a dairy commission which will have the authority to hold hearings and establish milk prices for fluid milk within the six states. Also, any milk produced outside of those states and consumed for fluid purposes in New Eng land would also command a higher price. However, the compact can only move forward if U.S. Secretary of Agriculture County A«'n Cows in Milk Avg. The Pro Ag Officials claim with the severe economic conditions facing all dairy far mers. The Secretary should have no reservations about allowing the compact to move forward. The federal legislation allows six additional slates to join the compact. They are Maryland. Virginia, Dela ware, New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania. Tewksbury said. “Once Secretary Glickman makes his determination, then we must work with state legisla tors in passing legislation to allow these states to join the compact individually.” Tewksbury said the task in joining the compact will not be easy. First, a hew state wanting to join the compact must bor der on a state that is an exist ing member of the compact. Second, the legislators in each state must pass the needed legislation and must be signed by the governor of each state. After this takes place then each state’s application must be approved in Washington. Milk Avg. ECMJtoul 69.4 69.0 68.5 67.0 66.3 66.1
