Pa. Jersey Association Selects Queen, Honors Achievements MEADVELLE (Crawford Co.) Roberta McConnell, of Volant, Lawrence County, will be a queen for a year as she was crowned the 1996 Pennsylvania Jersey queen at ceremonies during the Pennsyl vania Jersey Convention held at the Days Inn, here. Match 29 and 30. During the evening banquet, youth production awards and achievement awards were also presented. A veteran Jersey breeder, McConnell owns 10 cows and heifers. She t has traveled with her Jerseys to county, district, state and national shows. She has also received the Jacob M. Brunges Production award twice. McConnell’s reign as queen will allow her to represent the association at various shows and events throughout Pennsylvania. In the fall, she will travel to Louis ville, Kentucky where she will represent Pennsylvania in the Natonal Jersey Jug Queen Competition. McConnell, the daughter of John and Lois McConnell, is a senior at Wilmington Area High School. She is a nine-year member of the local 4-H cooking club for six years. Momingstar is a freshman at Penn State in Sharon, and is an active member of her county’s dairy promotion committee. A member of the No-Bull 4-H Dairy Club for 11 years, she has shown at various county and district shows. She is also involved with the Mercer County dairy judging and dairy bowl teams. She has also served as a Junior Jersey Club district representative. Serving as judges for the com- petition were Elaine Leise, Rey- sale averaged $448, with total sale earnings at $5,820. The 1996 achievement awards were collected by Joy McConnell, of Volant, in the junior division and Roberta McConnell, of Vol ant, in the senior division. The outstanding first year member was Elaina Rader, of Butler County. In the scrapbook competition, Elaina Rader collected the fust prize in the junior division, while Melissa Wertz won the senior division. Rhonda Chapman, of Water ford, was the winner of the Jersey scholarship which is presented annually. Youth from across the state entered the Jacob M. Brunges pro duction contest. Distinguished Service Bob Kenny, of Enon Valley, T I and Charles Hotson, of Meadville were both recipients of the 1996 Pennsylvania Jersey Cattle Asso ciation’s Distinguished Service Award. Bob and his wife, Alma, farm with Glenn and Lisa and Don and Wendy Kenny on Kenny farm. They have a herd of 275 milking Jerseys. Hotson is the foundation of Spruce Row Jerseys now owned and managed by Jeff and Janet Peters. The Distinguished Service award was presented at the even ing banquet at the annual meeting. Other awards were presented in conjunction with a morning break fast program, followed by the annual Jersey calf sale. Stuart and Elaine Noble, of Nobledale Farm, Gillett, received the Young Dairyman Award. The Nobles, who farm with Stephen Noble, currently milk 70 Jerseys on their five-eeneration farm.
