April 6. 1996-817 Agri-Women Urge Adoption Of Estate Tax Exclusion KANORADO, KS. The proposed increase in the unified credit against estate and gift taxes is a “positive step” according to AAW President Jean Pettibone of Kanorado, Kansas. “The increase in the credit, which would effec tively increase the exemption equivalent to $750,000 by the year 2001, would help to mitigate the impact of inflation on the estate tax credit” Recalling the involvement of the 21-year-old national organiza tion in estate tax reform over the years, Pettibone noted that. “Members of American Agri- Women were in the forefront aggressively pushing for equity in estate tax legislation, when the current unified estate and gift tax $600,000 exemption equivalent was written into law. An increase to $750,000 plus inflation adjust ment after that would help to bring the exemption equivalent up to date.” Noting the proposed exclusion from the gross estate for family owned businesses, Pettibone went on to say, “The exclusion of the first million in value, and one half of the next 1.5 million would be a great benefit for farming and ranching families. Without the added burden of estate taxes, the next generation could phase into the family business in a more effi cient and business oriented manner.”
