For those successfully complet ing the course, a Pa. Department of Labor certificate will be issued which permits students over 14 years old, btit not yet 16, to work on a farm other than their parents’. Stray Voltage When a dairy farmer has a drop in production and is searching for a reason, stray voltage is often suspected. In reality, the loss in milk is usually due to nutrition, herd health, or management changes. Don’t get me wrong, there is stray voltage out there, but it is not nearly as prevalent as farmers tend to believe. The main symptom that indi cates stray voltage may be a prob lem is abnormal animal behavior. Examples are: • Animals avoid a waterer or feeder. • Unusual drinking or eating behavior at a watcrcr or feeder. • Confined animals dance on their feet, constantly shifting their weight • Animals appear uncomfort able and difficult to handle. • Animals are reluctant to enter a milking parlor or bam. • Animals run or jump out of a building area quickly when released.
