N.E. Pa. Bam Meetings MONTROSE (Susquehanna Co.) Those interested in mak ing a tie-stall bam more comfort able and productive can attend one or more of nine bam meetings scheduled to be held at farms in an eight-county northeast Pennsylva nia region. A variety of farms were selected for the meetings so that particip ants can have the opportunity to see what others have or have planned to do to improve cow comfort and production. Dr. Robert Graves, Penn State University professor of agricultur al engineering, is to lead the dis cussion at each farm to help parti cipants consider ideas for their own operations. Topics to be addressed include cow comfort, bam ventilation, slot inlets, air ducts, exhaust fans, tun nel ventilation, natural ventilation, stray voltage, wiring, lighting, manure handling and safety. Different discussions are to occur at the different farms, depending on the facilities. The meetings are to be held the week of March 25. Wayne County On Monday, March 25, the meeting is to be held from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Highland Farm, owned by Bill Bryant The farm is in Honesdale and has a milking herd of 70 cows with a rolling herd average of 21,583 pounds of milk, 734 pounds of fat. and 700 pounds of protein. The facilities include a combi nation bank bam and a newer bam with comfort stalls. Ventilation is done with a bank of fans in an upstairs area with manually adjusted slotted inlets. There is a new gated free-stall building for heifers and dry cows that features an open ridge and cur tain sides. To get there, take Cliff Street out of Honesdale. At a “Y” at Bun nell’s Pond, bear right, continuing until the Erst stop sign. Turn left. At a “T” turn right. The farm is 1.5 miles further on the right side of the road. Lackawanna County On Monday, March 25, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., a meeting is to be held at the Paul and Mark Darling Farm in Nicholson. The Darlings milk 55 cows with a rolling herd average of 21,398 pounds of milk, 823 pounds of fat, and 699 pounds of protein. The facilities include an older tie-stall bank barn with an attatched bam for heifers and dry cows. Work was recently com pleted on an improved ventilation system with slotted inlets. Tunnel ventilation is to be installed. To get to the farm, from Rl 81, take Exit 63 and follow signs to Fleetville, a distance of about four Offer Opportunities For Better Bams miles. From Flectville Comers, turn north (a right) onto RL4O7. The bam is located about one mile from Flectville Comers, on the right side of Rt. 407. Wyoming County On Tuesday, March 26, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., a meeting is scheduled to be held at Da Vue Holsteins, owned by Dave Mat tocks. Tunkhannock. The Sl-cow herd has a rolling herd average of 23,467 pounds milk, 836 pounds fat, and 749 pounds protein. The facilities include an older bank bam with 43 stanchions cur rently using exhaust fans and cir culating fans. Also included is a new Virginia-style heifer bam with a gravity fed manure pond. To get there from Russell Hill, located at the intersection of routes 6 and 87, take Vosburg Road (and old Dewolf’s Texaco station serves as a road landmark) and proceed one mile. Sullivan County From 12:30 to 3:30 p.m., Wed nesday March 27, a meeting is to be held at the Dennis and David Hottenstein farm in rural New Albany. The Hottensteins milk 74 cows with a rolling herd average of 21,841 pounds milk, 936 pounds of fat, and 721 pounds protein. The highlights of facilities to see include a tie stallw ith comfort stalls, an aerovent ventilation sys tem in a 40-foot by 189-foot barn built in 1984. It has a Magnet feed ing system. To get to the barn, from Overton take the New Albany/Overton Road 1 mile, or from New Albany the distance is five miles. The barn is along the left side of the road. The farm milks 63 cows with a rolling herd average of 20,977 pounds of milk, 759 pounds of fat and 688 pounds of protein. The facilities inlcude a two-row tie-stall bam with exhaust fans and wooden air distribution ducts that have been in operation for many years. The farm is located along Sheshequen Road, which is State Route 1043. Actually located in Horn brook, travel north on James Street across the James Street Bridge and turn left onto Sheshe quin Road shortly after crossing bridge. Travel north to the farm. On Thursday, March 28. from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., a meeting is to be held at the Bishcroft Farm, owned by Herman Bishop, of Roaring Branch. The farm milks 88 cows, with a rolling herd average of 22,414 pounds of milk, 866 pounds of fat and 728 pounds of protein. The facilities are undergoing expansion. The latest addition can be easily converted from beddge pack to freestall. They are pursu ing natural ventilation in this bam.
