Lancaster Farming, Saturday, FMruary 24,1996-Al7 Grazing Conference Reminder The 1996 Pennsylvania Grazing Conference and Trade Show will be held Wednesday and Thursday, Match 6 and 7, at the Embers in Carlisle, Pa. The Embers is located on route 11, about 1/2 mile east of 1-81. This it the second year for the event, sponsored by the Grazing Research and Education Center in Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences and the Pennsylvania Forage and Grassland Council. The purpose of the conference it to present useful and current information to a wide range of people interested in grazing. Featured speaker for this year's conference is Dave Forgey, a highly successful grazier and Hoard's Dairyman columnist from Indiana. Other speakers from outside Pennsylvania are Jim Green, Agronomist from North Carolina, and Danny Fox, Beef Nutrition and Management Specialist from Cornell. On Wednesday morning, Dave Forgey will talk about his transition bom confinement housing to grazing, and about bis plans for the future. In the afternoon be will focus on putting all the pieces of a successful grazing system together. Jim Green will talk about the principals of grazing management In the morning, and again in the afternoon, people can attend one of three breakout sessions to hear experienced graziers and other experts discuss their experiences with; a) watering systems, b) fencing systems, and about c) paddock and lane layouts. That evening, a panel of four graziers will discuss animal behavior as it relates to grazing. Thursday morning, Danny Fox will talk about raising dairy heifers and beef on pasture, and Jim Green will focus on fine tuning a controlled grazing system In the morning, people can attend two of three breakout sessions on; a.) hot season grazing, b) raising dairy heifers on grass, and c) raising beef on pasture.
