Page 24— Corn Talk, Lancaster Farming, Saturday, February 10, 1996 WHAT’S NEW FOR AGRQNOMIC WEED CONTROL IN 1996 D.D. Lingenfelter And W.S. Curran Dept, of Agronomy Penn State The new year has brought us a number of herbicide label changes and new pro ducts that are avail able for weed control in com, soybeans, and alfalfa. Several new pro ducts are on the hori zon. We’ve tried to summarize some of the highlights of these changes below. Corn Label changes and new products: • Accent SP can now be applied to food-grade corn hybrids (high lysine, white, and waxy). The rotational interval for soybeans has been changed from 10 months to IS days. Also, the worker restricted entry inter val (REI) has been reduced from 12 hours to four hours. Several new tank mix partners may be added to the label. Accent may be applied broadcast to com up to 24S tall (free-standing) or that exhibits six or fewer collars. However, application to 3 to 4 leaf com provides the best safety. • Basis 75DF (rim sulfuron + thifensul furon (Pinnacle)) is a combination annual grass and broadleaf herbicide. This DuP ont product is applied early POST, up to 6S tall com or before the third collar is visible. Since rimsulfuron is similar to Accent, this product is good on 1-2 S tall barnyard grass, foxtails, and panicum. Basis also controls smartweed, pigweed, lambsquar ters, and velvetleaf that are 1-3 S tall. Basis had a few rela tively minor label changes from 1995; however, others are approval. Label changes pend ing include tank mixing with atrazine. Marksman, and others for a broader spectrum of weed control and resistance manage ment. Others include raising the minimum application rate to IS FORCE* 1.5 G is the #1 dealer recommended soil insecticide in the Northeast. FORCE offers outstanding protection against a broad spectrum of soil borne insect pests, including Northern and Western corn rootworms, cutworm and wireworm, Other benefits include Low toxicity to mammals and birds No impact on earthworm populations Compatibility with Accent, Beacon and Broadstrike herbicides and other post applied herbicides. Less leaching potential than other soil insecticides gallon per acre and applying Basis prior to the fully emerged third collar of com. • Exceed 57WDG (prosulfu ron + primisulfuron (Beacon)), developed by Ciba, is applied at 1 ounce product/acre (previ ously 0.88 ounce product/acre). It will be mariceted as 5 x 4 ounce water-soluble packets that will treat 20 acres. It is applied postemeigence and is good on most annual broad leaves including, velvetleaf, pigweed, lambsquarters, and smartweed. Exceed is currently the most effective post herbi cide for bur cucumber control in com. • Roundup Ultra from Mon santo is a 4-pound ai/gallon product that already contains the needed additives. Most injury occurred in soils with cool wet conditions, high pH, low organic matter content, or after soybean herbi cides carried over. According to the labels, Broadstrike + Dual 7.67 L and Broadstrike Plus O.B6WSP (flumetsulam + clopyralid (Stinger)) can not be applied to soils with a pH grea ter than 7.8 and/or less than 1.5 percent organic matter in com. Al so, com should be planted at least 1.5 inches deep and after average soil temperature is above 50 F. Injury still can be difficult to predict, so Penn State does not recommend soil applied Broadstrike products FORCE 1.5 G Protects Your Crop, Is Safe For The Environment J for early season com when environmental conditions can favor injury. The use of IMI com can provide an insurance policy for Broadstrike injury. • Scorpion 111, from DowE lanco, is a postemergence pro duct for com that contains flumetsulam, clopyralid, and 2,4-D. Scorpion 111 will be applied early post (<BS com) and is effective on a wide spec-* trum of broadleaf weeds, including Canada thistle. A her bicide for grasses will need to be included in the program. Broadstrike injury to com is not an issue with this product; how ever, early application to com is necessary for maximum 2,4-D safety. • Permit 75DG, (halosulfu ron) is marketed by Monsanto post herbicide applications Lambsquarters, velvetleaf and pigweed are the problem broadleaves on our farm We sometimes have problems with foxtails, fall panicum and other grasses "At times, we've had to go in with a tankmix of Accent, Banvel and atrazine for a rescue treatment With FORCE, we've got the freedom to use any post product that's needed without worrying about the insecticide interacting with the herbicide Consistent Performance You Can Trust FORCE 1 5G has received excellent rootworm ratings from Cornell University Cornell Four-Year Average Rootworm Trials T'Band RaW 4 Year Treatment 1000 Average 8 2 39 FORCE 1.5 G Counter ISC 8 2.68 Lorsban ISG 8 2 89 Untreated checks 4 25 Avetaae trials completed at both the Tully and Fieeville locations (1992-19951 Rates are expressed as oz product per 1000 row feet rootworm that cause this damage (Turn to Pago 25)
