84-Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 27, 1996 On Being a Farm Wife (and other hazards) Joyce Bupp Are you a believer? I’ve never really been. Though for years I’ve collected the books and found them interesting and entertaining. Almanacs. Repositories of as tronomical information, planting recommendations, assorted help ful as well as whimsical tips, tid bits and recipes. And weather pre dictions. Not that I’ve ever taken those weather predictions too seri ously. After all, how can the weather be predicted months, a year, in advance? So, fellow scofflaws of almanac weather predictions like myself take note. The Farmer’s Almanac for 1996, or at least the condensed version on our desk, made this forecast for the period of January 4 to 7: “Severe storm Mid-Atlan tic states to New England brings heavy snow, followed by fair skies.” Lest it slipped your mind, the “heavy snow” we shall all tell our grandchildren about for years to come came on ... Sunday, Jan uary 7. Just coincidence, you say? Maybe. Maybe not. But for the record, here are some of the pre dictions for this part of the country through the rest of 1996. February 24 to 29, moist south erly winds are expected to dump snow from Atlanta up through the Mid-Atlantic. You might want to stock up on milk and bread. March 8 to 11, a severe storm is predicted east of the Rockies, across the Mississippi Valley to the Northeast. Stock up on milk and bread. Again. But two weeks later, March 24 to 27, heavy rains are called for across the Mid-At lantic. Keep the boots and buckets handy. It's a fact! Contaminated water can have a costly effect on your livestock and poultry performance. Our years of experience plus hundreds of farm related treatment systems has proven the validity and practicality of correcting contaminated water. Welcome weather for the Easter weekend. But don’t put away the foul weather gear just yet, since April 20-23, storms are predicted to continue in the East. Storms? What kind of storms? May 28 to 31 is expected to be rainy. About four out of five Me morial Days usually are, for what ever reason. Probably caused by the outbreak of picnics. Then, get ready for the June 16 to 19 heat wave, a thought that sounds almost appealing right now. And to add my own predic tion, the annual June hatch of pes ty flies. Predictably, by the time June 28 to 30 rolls around, severe thunderstorms are expected, with possible tornados. We could skip that one. A nice Independence Day is called for, making up for those wet Memorial Day picnics. Lode out for August 4 to 7, when Farmer’s Almanac projects a hurricane threat for the Eastern Seaboard. Make a cautionary run to the supermarket, just in case. The end of August, 28 to 31, calls for clearing in the East and turning hot A good portent for the beach resorts to have a great, end-of summer wrap-up weekend. Make your reservations early. October, my favorite weather month, is supposed to start off with storms the first few days. Trick-or-treaters can take heart that Halloween weather is to be pleasant in our area. Stonns from Maryland through New England are predicted in the December 4 to 7 time slot, followed by colder in a few days. No almanac prediction for Christmas. My prediction?
